Help School get a Football Program

Post by TripleDouble »

Eastern Beaver is in a running for a $10,000 scholarship to start a football program at the school. They are on a nbc website called nbc4i.upickem.net. To vote click on the make a difference box. The school that receives the most votes will earn the scholarship. You can vote once per day. This will help the school with equipment, bleachers, scoreboards, and many other needs for a football team. Their are more details about voting on the website, along with a description of why each school needs the scholarship.

Here's the article on the website:
School Name: Eastern Middle/High School
Program Name: Eastern Football
District Name: Eastern Local Schools
Program Category: Shine
Program Description:
Since the formation of our district in 1959, Eastern Local Schools have represented our community with pride. However, one important detail of the community pride has been missing high school football or "Friday Night Lights" as my friends and colleagues refer to it. Our district with cooperation from Eastern Youth Leagues, volunteers, and several area businesses started football during the summer and fall of 2012. We had over 100 students participating in grades 3-8 in both flag and tackle football during the season.
Sadly, we have no home field, bleachers, lights, practice area, or equipment to use. The flag football team practices and plays games on the baseball field and the tackle team practices on an 80 yard field next to the school. The equipment we use is all donated or purchased used with the exception of junior high shoulder pads and helmets. Even though our teams didn't have a lot going for them, the junior high team was 6-2 at the end of the season and the 5-6 grade team won better than half of their games as well. The community support is outstanding.
As a district we are in need of equipment for football. We have no practice gear or equipment, restroom facility, storage area, or lights for our football players. We do have donated bleachers and goal posts. We are writing this grant with the hope of receiving the much needed ten thousand dollars to make the necessary improvements in equipment and facilities to move forward with football.
Impact Of Grant:
The grant would provide much needed funding to enrich the lives of students who live in the county of Ohio with the highest unemployment rate. Our district also has a 84.6% free and reduced lunch rate. Even with the poverty our children face, we have performed very well academically. In grades 6-12 which I am the the principal of, we earned 18/20 possible points on the state report card during 2011-2012 school year . Our children are resilient and tough in the classroom, on the playing field, and at home. Our students work extremely hard at school and home. They deserve the same opportunities that other children have in and out of the classroom. This grant will allow our children to experience football as an extracurricular activity and also have the necessary equipment to be successful. The grant will also help our school system, which is one of the poorest in the state meet the needs of our students. Our board of education has agreed to put a very small sum of money back each month in capital improvement funds to hopefully fund this program in the coming school years. However, with the current rate of savings, it would be several years before enough money would be saved to do any sizable projects. This grant would put a smile on the face of every Eastern staff member, student, and community member. I can assure you the ten thousand dollar investment would touch hundreds of lives in our school district.

If getting the funds become available does Eastern have a plan or people in mind for coaching
