OHSAA releases enrollment numbers

OHSAA has released the enrollment numbers that will be used to determine divisions for the next two years. Schools have until May 6th to appeal these numbers.

Ironton would move down to div 5 with 174 boys
Ports. West down to div 5 with 162 boys
Minford moves up to div 4 with 187 boys
Chesapeake up to div 4 with 187 boys

could you imagine a wheelersburg and ironton dueling it out in the playoffs

The cut off numbers for each Division will change some, we'll have to wait and see just how much they do change.

It looks like Ironton will be right on the line between D4 and D5. We'll know soon. Very close.

I know for my high school I'm pretty sure these numbers don't reflect the joint vocational school students which is why they have until May 6th to appeal. So depending on how your district accounts for JV students they might rise a little. I expect my hs to rise about 15 boys.

Wow, check out the numbers for Bellaire.....147 boys and 156 girls.

I remember in '97, NY played Bellaire in the Division IV playoffs. NY's last year in D IV. NY was one of the smallest D IV teams in the region, almost D V and Bellaire was one of the largest D IV teams in the region, almost D III.

Today, NY has more boys than Bellaire, and they both have fewer students than back in '97.

I'm pretty sure they do include vocational school students. They always had included them in past counts when the numbers were first released.

Each school district is probably different. I just know when they released them 2 years ago our school's final number was bumped about 20 students from these preliminary numbers... and the reason that was given was that the JV students had to be added back into high school's enrollment figure. In this compilation, our's looks way too low.

Not saying that is for every school though.

i see maybe some of the following teams changing divisions moving down out of division 2 maybe. athens, centenial and independence. being replaced by maybe franklin, bellbrooke, chillicothie. moving down out of division 3 roger bacon, greenon, waverly, being replaced bym river valley, fairfield union and fairland. moving down out of 4 elgin, portsmouth west, pleasant, being replaced by, northridge, minford and chesapeake. maybe caldwell and monroe central moving down, being repalced by central catholic.

who knows since now it is not based on pure numbers with different numbers for private schools and traditions being involved.

i would definetley expect athens to drop if enrollment numbers correct.

I believe River is the only school in the East District to qualify for the playoffs in 3 different divisions - in '93 (D-4), in '97 (D-5) and most recently, several times in D-6.

Using last year’s breakdown
Minford is now D4 with 187
West is down to D5 with 162
Portsmouth is on the bubble of D5 and D4 with 179. ( 2 above last year’s D5 cut.)
Ironton is the same boat as Portsmouth with 174
Valley is all the way down to 126 only 2 above the D6.
Oak Hill is up to 160 ( yet they play in SOC1 and Valley in SOC2) interesting stuff.

Minford and Norwest are now the two largest schools in Scioto County.

I saw these estimates posted on another forum, and he is probably right within 3-4 boys either way. Again, just estimates:

"My estimates based on logical breaks, tendency to keep D1 a few schools smaller and the rest even, etc.

D1: 496 and up
D2: 326 to 495
D3: 239 to 325
D4: 171 to 238
D5: 121 to 170
D6: 120 and down"

Based on his figures, this would mean:
DI approx. 113 teams
DII approx. 123 teams
DIII approx. 124 teams
DIV approx. 115 teams
DV approx. 112 teams
DVI approx. 131 teams

Note: The Cleveland City schools have not submitted final numbers yet, but I assume all would be in Div. 1-3 range.

I suspect the divisions would be a bit more balanced than this (all around 120), and some of the smallest football playing schools of past years may or may not field teams (a school like Marion Catholic would be an example). If anything based on these approximations, DVI cutoff might actually move down to move a few teams up to DV, and the DIII/IV cut may move up a boy or two to push schools down into DIV.

After transferring all the info to a spreadsheet and weeding out the schools that do not play football some noticeable trends occurred..... Wherever the cut off number is between divisions there is going to be many teams very close to that number... There is a greater disparity between the top & bottom teams in D-1 this coming year.... I used the Cleveland school numbers from last time and tried to keep the division with equal teams as possible and came up with this estimation.

Wonder how many schools are looking at the numbers and tweeking there enrollment???
