That’s enough to get my vote. Most schools would like to have 3 state finals in their entire history the tigers did it in a decade.

As for Portsmouth our best team of the 80s had to be the 1984 team. I think they lost in the state semifinal.

Green Bobcats 1989 , 10-0 . Not bad for a small school, that hasn't had football for very many years.

I would have to say that the 1985 Southern Tornadoes belong on this list. They were 5-5 with a SVAC title to show for their hard work. That team had some great players like Pete Roush, The Grueser boys, Jimmy Wolfe, etc. They were coached by Bill Hensler with an assist from Rutland legend Jim Vennari.

If they don't make this list no one does..

I am going to add Trimbles' 1980 team, (which I think was the best team in Trimble history) It featured Mike Roback, Gene Campbell, Larry Dixon, Scott Holbert, and my brother Eric, among many other Trimble greats. They went 10-0 for the regular season and lost to a tuff Newark Catholic team in the playoffs. I think the score was 21-14 they were very talented in all phases of the game. They were coached by the Late Ed Bolin. You can read about them and see videos on trimblefootball.com.

I would have to agree 100%, that group of players could play with anyone. They sure were fun to watch. JMHO

Okay L.R. here's what I've got

1980 Trimble Tomcats
Head Coach Ed Bolin (2nd year)
TVC Champions
OHSAA Playoffs

Schedule:
33 @ Coal Grove 20
39 @ Minford 7
37 Wahama 0
61 Alexander 12
35 @ Warren 15
55 Federal Hocking 0
40 Vinton County 8
54 @ Belpre 13
56 Miller 6
41 @ Nelsonville-York 0
14 Newark Catholic 21 @ Newark White Field
465 102

First Team All-Ohio: Mike Roback, Gene Campbell, Scott Holbert
Third Team All-Ohio: Larry Dixon
Coach of the Year: Ed Bolin

All League: Mike Roback - POY, Gene Campbell, Scott Christman, Mike Deal, Larry Dixon,
Bruce Fouts, Scott Holbert, Steve Lanning

Mike Roback had a QB rating of 119 which is a school record and still is tied for most touchdowns in a season with 19 (Roger Bingman tied him in 1989). He also kicked the longest field goal in school history at 44 yards.

Scott Holbert had 988 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns which are still school records

Gene Campbell had 21 rushing TDs which stood as a school record for 24 years.

For years in playoff programs they would list on the back cover the highest attended playoff games, and until the mid to late 1990's the Trimble/Newark Catholic game was listed, it was the only non-state championship game in the top five.

you can see some game film clips on my you tube channel at www.youtube.com/kadugan28

I actually think Ironton's 1988 team was better than the 1989 team.

And I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say Ironton could have had 5 state title in the 80s...

81 - did not make playoffs but considered by many to be Ironton's best team in the playoff era
82 - Frank Stams 21, Ironton 14 - if I recall correctly, Ironton was one toe-tackle away from tying this one in the second half; and then who knows
85 - state semis - DeSales 24, Ironton 19 after Ironton led 19-10 after 3 qtrs; DeSales scored twice in the 4th due in large part to a key defensive injury for Ironton; DeSales went on to beat Orrville in the finals 21-13
88 - SVSM 14, Ironton 12 - couple of very controversial calls went against Ironton, plus QB Lutz played with an injured (broken?) foot
89 - State Champs

How about the 1988 Notre Dame Titans, with "The Dawg Defense",Went 10-0 and unscored on. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
