Logan Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2008

Post by loganlocos »

The LHS Athletic Hall of Fame elected four new members, upping the Hall Of Fame's numbers to 128 members since the Hall of Fame began electing members in 1976.

The new members are:

JIM HUMMEL, Class of 1944 - Hummel was a 3-year lettermen and 4-year starter for the Chieftains from 1940-1943. Although WWII interupted his junior and senior seasons, the Chieftains won an SEOAL title in 1941 with Hummel playing quarterback and halfback. He was a captain for the 1943 Chiefs. He also was a member of 2 SEOAL championship basketball teams. His son, George (class of 1965) was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1981. Hummel joins classmate Jack Rauch and teammates Bill "Mutt" Bryan (1941), Mark Lohr (1941), Tracy Conrad (1942), Bill Johnston (1942), Mark Wylie (1943), Fred Jacoby (1945), Roy "Bud" Magle (1946), Delmar "Red" Mowery (1946), Bob Schmitter (1946), Dave Bell (1947), and John McBroom (1947).

JIM ROBINSON, Class of 1974 - Robinson, admittedly an "average" athlete in his playing career, was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility thanks to his unparalleled success as a coach of Chieftain football, wrestling, and track teams. Robinson has previously been ineligible for election due to being an active coach. Robinson oversaw 35 league championships as an assistant coach in football (13 titles, 10 as offensive coordinator), assistant coach in wrestling (3 titles), and in track field (10 titles as an asst. coach, 9 as a head coach). Robinson joins classmate John Corby (of WTVN radio fame) and numerous former players.

COY LINDSEY, Class of 1997 - Coy Lindsey was a standout member of Chieftain basketball teams from 1993-94 to 1996-97. Lindsey was the SEOAL MVP as a senior and four year lettermen and basketball and also lettered 3 times in cross country and twice in track. He holds numerous school records in basketball and ranks towards the top in several categories, specifically free throws and three point field goals, in OHSAA history. Lindsey is the first member of the class of 1997 to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Brooks Burris (Class of 1994) and Josh Lawrence (Class of 1999) are teammates previously inducted.

JOEY CONRAD, Class of 2001 - Joey Conrad was a 10 time lettermen (3 in football and baseball, 4 in basketball) and winner of 8 SEOAL championships including a championship in every season in football and baseball. He led all three teams deeper into the state tournament than any had previously been (Regional Finals in football, regional semi-finals in Basketball and Baseball). Conrad was the league MVP in football as a senior and a second team All-Ohio selection in football and baseball. After graduating from Logan, Conrad moved on to Glenville State in West Virginia were he broke numerous national NCAA Div. II passing marks. Conrad currently is playing professional football in small indoor leagues. It is the first season of eligibility for Joey and he joins former teammates Josh Lawrence (basketball, 1999) and Wayne Bateman (football and baseball, 2000).

Each player will be inducted during the Chieftain football game on Sept. 12 vs. Gallia Academy. An induction ceremony and dinner will be held at either the Middle School or High School cafeteria on Sept. 11.

Chris Tolliver should have been in this class. Many many track records and he did things on the track back then that were matched by onlu olympic qualifiers. Too bad. Great Class though.

Hummel was elected by the "old-timers" committee. The other three were chosen among a list of 25 nominees. Tolliver was close this year, but fell just short. The list of 25 current nominees is pretty amazing.

It will be interesting to see who else from the class of 2001 will be selected for the Hall. There are quite a few deserving athletes from that class. Any thoughts on who could get in?

Johnny Conrad - All State in football and an alternate in baseball. Great athlete, maybe better than his brother, but made some bad choices after high school.

Jamey Hankison - All State in football. Won multiple championships in track and football.

Jim Bennett - All State in football and accomplished on the basketball court.

Other possibilities include: Jesse Henestofel, Nikki Tucker, Travis Kerns.

That's a pretty good list for that class. I can't remember, but I think Zach Woltz and Noah Bookman were also state wrestling qualifers, and if so, would deserve mention as well.
