How to block the inside veer versus a traditonal 5-2 defense

I have seen people block it two different ways:

1. Double team the nose with the FSG and chip off to BSLB and have FST inside release to block the FSLB

2. Base block with FSG on FSLB and inside release with FST to second level.

Thoughts on which one is better?

Either way will work but you have to make sure that you have some one trail the play. The veer works like any option it is meant to stretch the defense until a hole opens up.(See WVU in the 70's) So you have to have some one with the disipline to wait for the play to develop. The best way to defend it is keep the play working toward the sideline. At some point the QB has to make a pitch or keep it himself. Just stay infront of the ball. If your defense is disiplined then they can and will be succesful against the veer. The veer is the worst offense to over pursue. That will cause a lot of problems.

I would go with the first scheme you mentioned. Chances are that your FSG won't have to chip on the NG unless he is slanting play-side like a mad man but he might as well be there as a safety valve for your Center.

Also remember that it is very easy to pass out of the veer.

I also like the first b/c at also accounts for a nose shaded to play side. the FSG would come down on the nose and the center can check play side (in case of a slant by the wild man at nose) to BSLB.

As for having both rules...

I guess it depends on what kind of kids you have. If you have bright kids, then of course.
