Not sure if you’ve noticed but the non conference schedule has been upgraded quite a bit and ironton and Jackson have greatly improved. Instead of playing bad North College Hill, Bishop Watterson, Fairland squads we’re now playing serious regional contenders in ironton, and prep…played Pikeville a couple years ago in one of the four loss seasons. You’re putting too much emphasis on the W-L record. I get it…I love seeing us win every game as well but I’d rather be battle tested going into the playoffs. We’ve been competitive in every game thus far…battled back against prep when that one looked like it could get out of hand. Not too shabby for a team breaking in a sophomore QB surrounded by several other sophomores in my opinion.
Have you ever looked at the schedules back in the 90’s and 2000’s?

Teams played in the regular season included from 1991 to 2007:
- Bishop Ready
- Columbus Academy
- Martin’s Ferry
- Coldwater
- Newark Catholic
- Cabell Midland
- West Jefferson
- Kenton
- St Clairsville
- Johnson Central

As for “you’re putting too much emphasis on w/l…” I would agree with your claim if this season was an anomaly, but unfortunately it is not. This is how Burg has looked for the past five years. Going to blame all five of these years’ results on “youth?”

Also, if we saw improvement in the team… unfortunately we are seeing the same mistakes game after game, and year after year.

What are your yearly expectations ?
Average year: 8-2 with SOC title, couple wins in the playoffs. So 10-3 is what should be expected. This is where I expected this year’s team to be; same with last year’s team.

Below average year (occur once every 4 to 6 years): 7-3 without SOC title. One to two playoff wins. 8-4 on a bad year.

Above average year (occur once every four years): 9-1 with SOC title. Make it to regional final. 12-2 final record.

Regional title once every eight years.

State title once every 25-30 years.

Problem is that four losses is becoming the norm.
You will NOT beat Ironton and Jackson on a yearly basis. The series will go back and forth but you won’t dominate those series. So now you have to win every league game , that’s just not feasible. You’ll win the SOC 6/7 times a decade but not every year.
Ironton, no. IHS has a 21-14 advantage in the series. Burg should win about 1 out of every two to three against IHS.

But Burg has a winning record against Jackson, I believe 15-11. It was 14-7 before these past five years. So Burg historically won 2 out of 3 against Jackson.

You referenced under Woodward so I went with the non conference games during his tenure.

The non conference games you reference: lost to Bishop Ready…lost to Coldwater…split with NC…lost to Johnson Central…split with Cabell…lost to Kenton…lost to St. Clairsville…just off the top of my head.

Sorry 3-1 against NC

I agree watching some of the play calling and especially the fumbles are frustrating…as for “the last five years” though the 21 team won SOC and played in and narrowly lost a regional championship while beating ironton and Ridgewood in the playoffs.

Now you are getting my frustration.

Issues with play calling and turnovers are not being addressed. How many games has Burg lost in the past five years after turning it over 3-5 times? How many games has Burg lost after failing to score after half? Success for 2023 is now down to playing a good team while not beating ourselves.

As for “narrowly lost”, that’s become the programs new motto. I want to go back to “Burg doesn’t beat themselves.”

Seems we’re on par historically speaking when playing tough non-conference games…we’ll win some and lose some while being in the thick of them down to the wire for the most part.

Don’t take that as a knock , Jackson nor Ironton will dominate Burg. I guarantee you a 10 year series will see 5-5 , 6-4 , 4-6 for all 3 teams.

That’s been the history. But in the past five years, we just lose them.
- Ironton: 1-4
- Jackson: 0-4
- HP: 0-3

Wheelersburg has lost 2 tough non conference games this year by a combined 11 points. I know the Burg is usually a favorite in most of their games and they expect to win. And rightly so. There’s a lot of teams out there who would love to have the success they’ve had over the years.
They’ll get back on track. There’s not many schools out there who are willing to accept a challenge and play a tough schedule year in and year out.

This really isn't the case over the past 4 years though, both Jackson and Ironton have basically showed they have Burg's number right now.

From my memory these guys renewed the series in 2012.
They’ve played 11 games minus 1 Covid year.
Burg has won 6 = 2012,2013,2015,2016,2017,2018
Jackson has won 5 = 2014, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023

My theory is proving correct. It’s a great series between two good local programs. Breath man.

Actually it doesn’t.

First, you left off the prior 15 games where Burg has a 9-6 edge.

Second, before Jackson’s win in 2014, Burg lead the series 11-6, winning two games for every one win for Jackson. Since 2014, Jackson leads 5-4. Jackson has now won 4 of the last 5; a trend that never happened in the prior 17 contests.

The series has definitely shifted since with Burg trending downwards.

Ok here is a rebuttal, Burg was extremely good for about 5 year run, like probably the best in program history. Now that those teams are gone , Jackson has dominated and will continue to be a problem for Burg, those were good Jackson teams burg was beating, but guys like Salyers and Holden don’t come along every year.

Burg owned the series before those years; long before Salyers and Holden were even alive!

Now to the why: Burg’s spread offense is to easy for good teams to defend. If you watch enough Burg games, you can see this spread offense struggle even back in 2013.

Example: 2013 Burg team put up crazy offensive numbers most of the year; arguably the best passing team and offense Burg ever had. Then they ran into Hartley in the regional finals. Lose 42-20 with Hartley having no problem with the pass game. Score was closer than the game actually was.

2014, Burg runs into Hartley again but this time with Burg being more of a running team with a running QB. Burg loses 45-38 in overtime, with Burg leading towards the end and obviously being competitive throughout.

So Burg scored 18 more points with the running team even with a first year starting QB.

More proof? Take the 2017 team! Their playoff run almost came to an end against Columbus Academy who shutdown the spread pass attack for the first half. Fortunately Burg came back and went power run (Salyers and Holden on the bench). Academy could do nothing to stop that.

The 2017 state champion team didn’t do much in O throughout the playoffs. The D kept them in many games while the O took advantage of mistakes and turnovers to get points.

So where we are now: Burg is trying to run the spread against teams who have athletes to shut it down, and they are. What we are seeing from the O spread is high risk/low reward. Lots of turnovers and not enough points.

9-6 is owning a series ? 😂

So what you want to say is Wheelersburg is superior both in and out of the classroom and should dominate everyone in southern Ohio. Should basically never lose a game to a local team . Ok got it.

I don’t care what offense you run , the players on Burgs roster don’t scare anyone , definitely not Jackson.

You do realize Jackson is a big school with a good football tradition. They have good teams from peewee on up to varsity. Jackson always puts out some good football talent year in and year out. You will not beat Jackson every single game forever. Wheelersburg scares nobody , not the staff or the schemes , the talent isn’t superior to anyone.

Get over yourself and your superior mentality. Good luck going forward , I hope you find some peace. 4 loss seasons really seem to affect your happiness. God forbid you lose to West or Waverly. ✌🏼

Wheelersburg is going to be fine. They always schedule up. Their 3 losses are against teams with a combined record of 17-4.

Their SOS is 14th of 106 schools in DV.
We’re talking about a program that has won:
35 SOC Championships in the last 51 years
Has the 5th most playoff appearances in OHSAA playoff history
8 Regional Championships
Has made the Regional Championship 17 times
9 Undefeated Regular Seasons
2 State Championships
Currently ranks 4th all time in winning percentage
And has a ten year run of making it at least to the second round of the playoffs.

They’ll be fine.
Looking at the rest of their schedule;
They’re predicted by (fantastic 50) to win out. There’s a high possibility of them winning the SOC2. They’re predicted to beat Waverly by 14, Minford by 30, and West by 12. I know that those are just predictions but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see them at 6-3 and a top 4 seed in D5R19 come playoffs.

Wow, you went over the cliff on this one. Sorry I hurt your feelings. But I never said Burg should win every game. What on earth are you talking about? Also, what does classroom have to do with this discussion? And if any team was scared of another, those kids should not be playing football. That’s a silly comment, and anyone who has played knows that.

I am just pointing out the numbers. Burg had an 11-6 edge at one point and was clearly the better program. Since, the results have changed. That’s not my opinion; those are the numbers!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Burg lost one of those games. Sadly, this is where the program is.

The way to beat Jackson is through the air. Please please please try and run on Jackson, you’ll get stuffed like a turkey.
