May not have been nominated by his coach, perhaps? I did note just two Portsmouth players even on the team.

Anyway, I can tell you the MVL does ask that theirs not be published/broadcast until after the final team is eliminated. I don't know as I've ever seen that "embargo" broken, at least not purposely. And the MVL does it this way (usually) -- The first place team gets nine members, the second place team eight, and so forth. There is no voting that I know of. League champion coach automatically Coach of the Year.

I understand gahs4ever's thoughts on it, but I just don't buy that argument. If people are going to be upset, they'll be upset no matter when you release it. Release it the week after, so that those non-qualifying teams who might be having their banquets that week can note those honors. I just don't see any value or reason for withholding the information (though I understand Jottings' history lesson, since I once worked for a semi-weekly and hated it when the local daily was allowed to trump me be a couple days on some things).

Yeah, I think jottings is right about the reason for the embargo. A lot of the old papers in the SEOAL area were weekly and I think the practice carried over.

Personally, I prefer the voting be done instead of the automatic selections and the league champion as coach of the year. I think a lot of years the best coaching job doesn't win league coach of the year.

For my money, I'd give Grandstaff at ZHS the COY award. To get to 4-2 in the SEOAL with the kids they lost and the kids they returned was pretty impressive. They were the one team in the league that OVER-ACHIEVED in my opinion.

THANKS FOR THE LINK. IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK IN THE SEOAL, WHERE KIDS CAN PLAY FOR INDIVIDUAL HONORS AS WELL. THEY ARE NOT PLAYING FOR ANY THING LESS THAN A STATE TITLE. BUT AT LEAST ALONG THE WAY , YOU CAN EARN INDIVIDUAL HONORS BEING WITH A LEAGUE. BEEN A LONG TIME COMING. BUT WE ARE REAPING THE REWARDS OF THAT HARD, HARD SCHEDULE. AND THE GOOD NEWS IS, ALL THE FARTHEST AWAY TEAMS, HAVE TO COME TO US, NEXT YEAR.

How did Zanesville get kids on the team? The coach was not present at the all-league meeting. I don't remember any of them being put on the team a couple of Sunday's ago. I am not saying they don't deserve to be on there though.

That was due to the fact that Zanesville did not show up.

Zanesville was not at the meeting so I don't understand how they have players on the list. It's the rule that you cannot have all-league players if you aren't represented at the league meeting.

It is to bad that football and some of the other sports (basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc) are not like, golf, track, wrestling, etc where the athlete actually wins the right to be all-league, all-district, all-region & all-state. Football and the other sports depend on not who is the best athlete but who the coach wants on the team. I haven't had anyone in school for several years but even my own kids knew the best athlete was not always picked for these teams and that colleges don't always look at this stuff. They look at your stats, your films and if you are lucky, they come and watch you play. So, if someone doesn't make the all-league or all-district team, it isn't the end of the world, (it may only seem that way at the time)just accept that it is only the coaches opinions. (by the way, my son was voted all district & all state because a coach from another school nominated him, his own coach didn't bother to put his name on the list.)

golf track and wrestling are not individual sports
the all league award for the seoal is very "political"

Zanesville's coach did not make the meeting due to a last-minute family emergency and the SEOAL wanted to make sure the Zanesville kids were represented.

Also, my good friend and colleague loganlocos was 100 percent correct in regards to the timing of releasing the all-SEOAL team. I know, shall we say, the inside-inside-inside source as to who and when the teams are released.

There was also a very good post about setting team functions and being able to honor the kids accordingly. Three of the nine teams went to the playoffs, and whether any or none of them went to the next round the release was going to be the same date as it was (last Tuesday) to try to keep it as fair as possible to all the teams, and that's the way it will stay in the future.

What changed things was, when both Zanesville and Chillicothe got to the regional finals in boys basketball a couple years ago, the all-league team was held until those teams were eliminated, meaning the all-district teams came out before the all-league teams and the other eight teams were kind of left in limbo.

As a result, the process has been changed to pretty much give a little more than a week after the end of league play to release all the teams in all sports. The coaches usually meet the Sunday after the league season has concluded.

Using the old release patterns, if Logan, Chillicothe or Ironton had advanced to another game this week the all-district team would have come out before the all-SEOAL team. The proper order should always be all-league, all-district and all-Ohio in all sports.
