ARTICLE: Westland runs by Thomas Worthington,35-7.

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night at Westland, the Cougars battles the Cardinals from Thomas Worthington.
When all was said and done, this was a one-side, never in doubt running clock game..

Westland started this one out with a bang, with a 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Adjrain Settler, who broke three tackles to get into the end zone. The point after by Elliott Loless made this a,7-0 game after :18 of play.

After Westland forced the Cardinals to punt their offense would get a nice run of over 50-yards by Matthew Mickens, but a hold on the play took the run away, with 9:43 left in the opening quarter.

Trey Mayes would sack Cardinals quarterback,Zach Gallion with 2:59 left in the quarter, forcing a punt on the next play.
Early on in this one both of the Cougars lines made a statement, that let everyone know on this night, they were going to dominate and that is just what they did all night long.

#3,Clay Carrel the slippery quarterback for the Cougars took off on a 21-yard run, that left the defense lost and brought the home crowd to their feet, with 2:15 left.
Matthew Mickens would score on a 15-yard run with 2:07 left in the quarter. The point after kick made this a,14-0 game.

I am not sure why, but the Cardinals were attempting a lot of arm tackles and the Cougars ball carriers were making them pay for it, with big chunks of yards.

The Cardinals offense would show a little life with, 38.7 seconds left in the quarter, when workhorse running back, Jay Kidd picked up a first down on third and three.

Twelve seconds into the 2nd quarter Gallion threw to a wide opened, Khalil Jones, but the sophomore simply dropped the ball, forcing the Cardinals to punt again.

Westland used a 10-yard run and a 21-yard run ,Carrel to set up their next score. The score came with 10:33 left in the half on a 49-yard pass from Carrel to #10,Settler after the point after the scored ballooned to,21-0.

With 10:04 left in the half the Cougars defense came up big again, this time it was a pick by Matthew Mickens on a pass thrown by Gallion. This looked like a wing and prayer type play by the Cardinals first year quarterback. To define that, he winged it down field and prayed that it would be caught by one of his receivers.

The Cougars would once again go to their ground game, with 9:43 left in the half. Mickens would tack on 8-yards on a run to his right and then with 8:45 showing on the clock Carrel busted up the gut for a run of about 30-yards. His offense line blew off of the ball creating a big whole that allowed for the big gain. The six-play 54-yard drive came to an end with a 7-yard run by Carrel. The point after made this a,28-0 game with 7:17 left in the half.

Gallion would be picked off again with 2:40 showing on the clock, this time by William Peterson. Peterson picked the pass off close to his goal line and then returned it to his own 24.

At the 2:06 mark Mickens broke three arm tackles on his way to a run of over thirty yards.
Then with 1:37 left Carrel picked up 25-yards on a nice run up the gut and then a little to his right as he followed the blocking his line gave him.
The 5-plays 76-yard drive ended with a Mickens 2-yard run for a score. The point after made it,35-0 Cougars, with 1:09 left.

With a moving clock the third quarter flew by with no scoring.
There was a nice 39-yard run by Carrel where he broke a couple of tackles and used more good blocking from his teammates.
I believe it was Charlie Kneessi of the Cardinals who recovered a Cougar fumble with 5:33 left in the quarter.
With 5:00 left in the quarter, the Cardinals, Layne Burns blocked a Cougar punt.
I would say the Cardinals knew this game was long over but they refused to quit playing, which says so much about a team in a game like this.

Two of the bigger plays from the final quarter came at the beginning of the quarter and then at the end of it.
First Joshua Douglas picked of a Cardinal pass. Have to give the P.A. guy for calling out the name on this one.
The other play was a 1-yard touchdown run for the Cardinals by Marques Burns.
The point after by Beelal Hasan made the final score,35-7.
