Portsmouth 2014

Post by PTrojan59 »

Didn't see a thread on Portsmouth, so I decided to start one. The Trojans enter their final year of SEOAL play. Not 100% on the schedule but I believe it goes
@Valley (Thursday night)
@West
@Burg
@Waverly
Vs.Ironton
Vs.Logan
@Galia
Vs.Jackson
Vs.Warren
Vs.Cincinnati Hughes

The Trojans return a good bit from last year.
QB:Sky Oliver
RB:Darrion Robinson (assuming he is recovered from his injury)
RB:Austin Hollins
WR:Alex Dickerson
WR/RB:Luke Purdy
LB:Andrew Scott
LB:Michael Sturgil
LB:Zach Delotell
DL:Austin Rideout
DE:Vinny Kennedy
OL:Hunter Gibson

Just to name a few. I look for coach Sparks to improve this team even more from a much improved team a year ago. I see some games that are definitely winnable on the schedule. Can't wait for Football season!

Valley is on the schedule from my understanding........the offense should put up a lot of points (Sky Oliver 1,500 yds.passing, 400 yds. rushing), but the key to success for the 2014 Trojans is...........DEFENSE!! In the last 2 seasons, the Trojans have given up an average of 34 points a game. 18 wins in the last 6 years, mostly because of porous defense. I've said it until I'm blue in the face, until PHS gets defense back into the program, wins will be hard to come by. I'm hoping that finally the stop troops can hold opponents to under 20 points......if they can, we can have a winning season and quite possibly a playoff push. Even with last year's record, we were about 12th in the computer until the final week.

I love the enthusiasm that Coach Sparks has brought to the program. Now if the kids will show that same enthusiasm in off season workouts, the results will show.

I agree. I see PHS continuing to get better as well. That is a tough schedule!

Had a good talk with Coach Sparks yesterday, and he is very upbeat about the 2014 season. He told me that there are 64 kids currently working out, which is up about 12-15 kids from last year. Last season ended with just 45 kids. He also gave me a good report on Darion Robinson, who has been a hard luck kid his first two years on the varsity with knee injuries in both seasons. Darion will be a senior and is a legitimate home run hitter at the TB position. If he can stay healthy, and hopefully he will, he will be a nice compliment to QB Sky Oliver and the passing game. Coach Sparks knows the importance of returning defense to the Trojan football program, and look for an emphasis on the stop side of the field. He also complemented basketball coach Eugene Collins and his weightlifting program which has helped the football program as well.

GO FOOTBALL TROJANS 2014!!

I recently watched Austin Hollins at a combine in Columbus and I got to say this kid is going to be something special. Get this kid the ball coach. And if the rest of P-towns skill player are as athletic as Hollins then look out.
