Region 21

Post by tiger_pound_mom »

Haven't seen too much talk about this region unlike last season. What are everyone's thoughts? Does Nelsonville or Valley have a shot at taking the Regional Championship this season or is this a battle between the likes of Bishop Ready and Fredericktown?

What does Ready have returning? I think valley has some talent to win a playoff game, but I think we will struggle to make it out of the second round. We might if we get the right match up but we seriously lack depth. Not trying to knock any of the players, that's just how it is this year. IMO this will be our least likely chance to have a southern OH team win this region in quite some time. We have some good football teams this year. Just a little weak in this region.

Aside from Ready as usual, from what I've read and seen, the region actually may be a little down overall. Thats not to take a shot at the top teams, it's just that there is no powerhouse team that will run through anyone when the playoffs roll around. You've got your regular players

Grandview Heights
Bishop Ready
Valley
Fredricktown
Centerburg

Then you have Newark Catholic and Nelsonville York who arent as strong as usual, but still have the type of program that can win a big game when they arent expected to. If I had to rank them in order of "odds" to win the region:

1. Ready
2. Fredricktown
3. Valley
4. Centerburg
5. Grandview

But as we all know anything can and will happen in the Region. Fredricktown, Centerburg, Northmor all play each other later in the season, so there will be some shuffling at the top. My current top 8 at seasons end:

1. Ready
2. Valley
3. Grandview Heights
4. Fredricktown
5. Centerburg
6. Nelsonville York
7. Oak Hill
8. Monroe Central

I have Northmor losing to Centerburg and Fredricktown, and not getting enough second level to make it, and of course these are subject to change barring upsets.

I think you'll see a lot of familiar faces (Ready, Valley, Centerburg, etc.) with the exception of Newark Catholic and Bellaire.

Ready doesn't return a whole lot from last season but they reloaded. Brian Cross is now our head coach (former head coach at Canton McKinley, Grove City, and Olentangy Orange) who has more than 30 years of experience. Ready came from behind and beat a Whitehall team many people said is greatly improving and an Academy program that hasn't been a real contender since their state championship some 10ish years ago. Tonights game is interesting as London's head coach was Ready's defensive coordinator the last few years. That being said, Ready should win.

I would say that Fredericktown's win over Danville is probably the most impressive win so far in this region so I would consider them a contender for sure. After week 2 last season I made a guess on my final 8. I didn't put them in order but I did guess 7 of the 8 correct (I put in Ridgewood and left out Monroe Central). That said, I think that may be a little harder to do this season.

My way too early guess:

Ready
Valley
Grandview Heights
Fredericktown
Oak Hill
Centerburg
Coal Grove
Monroe Central

Nelsonville should get to 7 wins and could be a factor. They will need NC and some others to have good seasons. If they beat Logan, I am thinking they make it really easily at 8-2.
Coal Grove will need to beat Raceland due to the weakness of the OVC. I don't see Grove beating Wheelersburg, but 8-2 is reasonable and should get them in.
I will reserve judgement on Northmor until they play Centerburg in week 4.

It is early, but looking at schedules, we should know a lot in the next 3 weeks.

Monroe Central will likely win their next 8 games. Worst case scenario they'll finish 8-2.

Ready will gain a huge load of points with a win over Jackson, most likely taking over 1st place in the region (albeit still very early).

I can tell you one thing, from living in the area. You can count on Fredericktown as a contender to win the region. Take that to the bank, very very good football team. However Valley, and a few others are just as good if not better. Northmor, may sneak in, but I see them missing out. I am still not sold on Centerburg, they very well could lose to Northmor this weekend. The thing about Centerburg is their starters are very good, however after that, their is virtually no depth. I heard there was less than 30 kids in the program. I also can see Cardinton-Lincoln sneaking in, as they are capable of beating Centerburg, and I feel will beat Northmor.

Well we are closing in on the midway point of the season so it is probably time for this topic to heat up. Looking over the Region, I would guess that there are 17 teams still “in contention” competing for 8 playoff spots. I think the 8 winless teams and Huntington are all basically out and will not be a factor come playoff time. Of those 17, I think I would group them like this:

Not true Contenders but not quite “out” (4):
Belpre – Trimble is good. Really, really good. But negative yards? Just not seeing Belpre as a contender. Beat Wahama this week and I will have to reevaluate the Golden Eagles.
River – Competitive with Monroe Central, so they may win some games, but the schedule is severely lacking in points. Win the next 2 weeks and they may come back into the conversation.
Crooksville – Best case is they win 7 and that would take a win over Danville. If they go into Danville at 4-2, things will be different.
Fort Frye – 6-4 is best case and a few of those are going to be against possible 0-10 teams. There will not be enough points unless they beat MC , Frontier, or possibly both.

The “Fringe” Teams (teams that will be battling for the final spots) (8):
Coal Grove – Looks like a must win this week against Raceland. With Wheelersburg coming up in week 6 and a tricky matchup with Waverly in between, the Hornets need this with how bad the OVC is. The rest of their league is 3-9 so far. There are not a ton of points left for a 7-3 Grove team.
Oak Hill – Crushed by the Burg, but another team that won’t be challenged in the league. They can’t afford a slip up, but a win over Minford would all but put them in.
Centerburg, Northmor, and Cardington-Lincoln – Hopefully Knowledge will keep us up on these 3 teams. They are all 2-1 and will all pay each other here in the next few weeks. None of them will finish better than 8-2 (Fredericktown) but the one that knocks off the other two could be in contention.
Nelsonville-York – They need to beat Logan next week. They are not beating Athens, so 8-2 is the best case. River Valley starting 3-0 will help them a lot and if NC wins 6 it will as well. We will see where the Bucks are after week 5 and move them to a different “group”.
Newark Catholic – Really not sure what to make of the Green Wave. They obviously are not the same team they were in 2013. There have been a total of 32 points scored in their 3 games this year! There were 32 scored during halftime of the Meigs-Fairland game a couple of weeks ago! If they beat W. Memorial in 2 weeks, they will be a factor. If not, they are 6-4 and probably on the outside looking in.
Academy – I swear Academy Is always in the talk every year, but I am not sure I ever remember them making it. They have plenty of chances at points, but they will have to beat Grandview Heights or West Jeff to move up.

The Playoff Contenders (Take care of business and you will play week 11) (5):

Ready – The Region’s “big dog” and defending champ. They can take a huge step to a home game with a win over Jackson this week. A win there and 8-2 (minimum) is basically a certainty. The Silver Knights could lose to Loudonville and Hartley, but they should be securely in the playoffs. 8-2 and I am thinking “home” game for Ready.
Fredericktown – Sure looks like 10-0. Not a lot of “tests” left. The Danville win pretty much gives them another week playing at home when the season is over.
Grandview Heights – A couple of good early season wins. A win over Bexley this week will set them up for a run at a home game. Academy and West Jeff are still on the schedule, so plenty of points if the Bobcats take care of business.
Valley – Still some questions on defense but have scored 21 TD’s already with an explosive offense. There are tons of points left to be had on the schedule but the Indians would be in a great spot with a win over D3 (equivalent) Fleming County this week. The SOC is deep, so Valley will have to come to play every week, but if they go into the West game at 6-0, they will be in the driver’s seat to make the playoffs.
Monroe Central – 9-1 or 8-2 and that will probably be determined this week against Caldwell. 9-1 and someone will be going to Woodsfield to play in week 11.

Looking ahead:

Week 4 will tell us a lot about the teams I consider at the top of this region. We will know a lot more about Ready (@Jackson), Grandview (@Bexley), Valley (@Fleming County), Monroe Central (Caldwell), Coal Grove (@Raceland), and then you have the Centerburg and Northmor matchup.

This topic could look much different next week.

Ridgewood has just been moved back into this region from Region 19 because of another realignment from the OHSAA. They are a contender no doubt. If they beat Garaway this week they are likely to go 10-0 if not probably 8-2 or 9-1. They were in real danger of missing the playoffs in Region 19. It is a much tougher region. They are sitting at #5 in Region 21 as of today.

Ridgewood has very little to offer in way of points though. After tonight they have 2 schools left with winning records and no one left above D5. If they trip up once then they are looking at a potentially very long road trip Week 11.

Things got a lot more interesting. Will Valley have enough points to take #1 this week? I leave that math stuff up to Crabs bro. He should try and make a living off it!

I'm hoping in a couple years we'll get to see Crooksville in the discussion for making the top 8. It's been a while, I think last time they made playoffs was the year Sheridan went to the final four. They're having the first year new coach struggles right now, but they've been that team that wins the games that on paper they shouldn't.
