But I still think Vc has to take a gamble in the future and hire someone who brings that spark instead of keeping what you have which has proven to be mediocre at best. Since the bethel kid was qb in 04? You haven't had a solid team since. When you had the Stewart/batey kids you had size and talent but no results. I think a new coach could make a difference ... The right head coach .. Could turn it around ..

...... I guess I would just like to see Vc turn into programs like Jackson / Logan / Nelsonville

Again, for example; unrealistic expectations.

With the coach there now , yes !

It's very possible, VC has all the ingredients just needs the right coach .., we will just agree to disagree and hope for future success for the Vikes .. Would be great for the community

Charles Faquar wow man ..... Hate to see if Someone said something bad about Vinton county... First off my comments are just that.... my opinion ... Second I never said VC needed a new YOUNG COACH that apparently you hate so much lmao or any coach at all.
As far as Alexander i won't argue strength of schedule with you but I can tell you this, I know every kid on that team and the kids are much more excited and play with more enthusiasm and play like a team.... Because of coaching and staff changes that were made , yes maturing of players, strength of schedule all plays into success on the field ...if you pay attention to comments you probably could figure out that people like myself want other teams in the TVC to be successful , even VC ... Just not this Friday . I have to suggest that you keep a bottle of aspirin near by your radio when you listen to the games because if you get that fired up over what people post on hear I don't know if you could make it through another OT game like VC and the Spartans had last year?? You know that team that went 1-9 last year ...Good luck Vikings and Spartans on a injury free good game.

Spartans 28 Vikings 10

Good work Dundas

As far as this game goes I look at a close game that VC can win if they use ball control offense, and limit mistakes. I think Vikings have a mild chance to win out or they could go 0-10 just as easy! This game could be a momentum builder or a pride crusher one just has to wait and see.
GO VIKES

hawkeyepierce wrote:I really do not have time for this and maybe I will elaborate later, but here is Vinton County's football problem in one simple term; culture.

Our culture around our football program from the Lil' Vikes until High School has several deficiencies woven into its fabric, simply the culture. That goes from the structure and organization, to the lack of continuity, and to unrealistic expectations of everyone involved.

However, I can tell you this, changing coaches is not the answer. Someone mentioned Coach Combs, well, so you know, since Coach Combs arrived here in 2000, the Vikings football program has had four (4) football coaches. Each one, either quit or was non-renewed for the sake of expectations. Hiring a new coach, in my opinion, is the equivalent to using a band-aid on a severed limb. We must begin to look at ourselves first, come together for continuity, and develop clear goals and have a sound mission. Until then, I expect more of the same.

Hawkeye, we have had our differences in the past, but I have to whole=heatedly agree with what you are saying here.
I am not able to attend games anymore for health reasons, but always listen to Bob and Jeff broadcast Viking football and basketball on the radio.
Combs will become a legend in Viking sports down the road; if not already a living legend. Football will return to marginal glory at Vinton County some day, but changing coaches every few years is not the answer. Getting the boys that play so well in middle school to play in high school could be a good place to start, or just keep them here.
Congrats on your golf season!
I need to encourage my uncle to build a Vinton County country club and golf course on some of his vacant land :?: could be a wise investment!

You wouldn't be hiring coach after coach , you hire 1 who gets the job done

Somewhat true. I played 4 years at VC and had 3 coaches won 5 games total. We had very little talent in those days no middle school football until my freshman year and that team combined of 7 & 8 grades went undefeated; go figure!
The talent to win football games at Vinton county is walking the halls, but need to start playing.
Eventually (if happens) they see Coach Justy Burleson staying with the program. his attitude will rub off on the boys and they will start putting on the pads.

Will be making my first trip to McArthur for a football game on Friday, been there for basketball several times.

Will be wearing red and black to support my man Coach Penrod.

Looking forward to a great game. Think, on film, Vinton County looks a lot better than an 0-5 team. Should be a battle IMO.

Hitman I didn't get fired up. I like most football coaches. I was one myself and coached for 26 years at one school, 4 years at another and two at still another. I coached against the Vinton coach and don't know the Alex coach. Here is another shocker for you I'm graduate of Alexander and played under Snipes when Alex had good football programs. When I was a senior Alex had 63 players and 22 of them were seniors I don't have any dog in this fight. I don't post a lot on here but read it and when I see something that I don't agree with I give my opinion and pointing out the difference in the schedule that the two teams have played isn't getting bent out of shape. Its pointing out that Vinton County would have a great chance of having the same win loss record if the schedules were reversed.

I think this is going to be a close game. It will come down to the Spartans' ability to stop the run. This killed Alex last year. I am picking Alexander by a touchdown.

Go Alex.

Hoping most of the rain passes threw before the game.
Holding on to that ball will play factor in this game like many others in the area...
Should be a good one as always
