Fighting Tigers win own invitational tourney to open golf season

PINE GROVE — The Ironton Fighting Tigers are picking up right where they left off.

Despite the loss of leading golfer Nathan Kerns to a college career at Marshall, the Ironton golfers didn’t miss a swing as they captured their own invitational tournament for the second straight year on Monday.

Ironton had a 311-team score to outdistance the 12-team field by 10 strokes over runner-up Athens. Sophomore Josh Zornes led a strong team effort by shooting a 3-over par 73 to take medalist honors.

“We had a great effort for the first time out. One of our goals every year is to win our invitational,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns. “The kids really stepped up. Josh had a great day, especially on the front nine.”

Ashland, Ky., was third with 332, Gallipolis 340 and Portsmouth Clay and Wheelersburg tied at 342.

Chesapeake was next with 352 followed by West Union at 360, Jackson 363, South Point 394, Portsmouth 404 and River Valley 429.

Jackson’s Morgan Dobbins was the individual runner-up with a 75.

Zornes — who had a 1-under 34 on the front nine — got plenty of help from his teammates. Five of Ironton’s six golfers were among the top 13 individually.

Andy Holtzapfel shot a 78 including a 37 on the back nine. Josh Cooke had a 79 while Johnathan Williams and Mason Weisgarber each fired an 81. Josh Mullins had a solid round of 85.

Chesapeake was led by Roger Hoback with an 84 and Seth Ransbottom had an 88.

Wes Hall had a 95 and Zac Taylor a 96 to pace South Point.

Ironton will host South Point on Tuesday in a duel match. And play in the Portsmouth Invitational on Thursday.
