Ironton Golf Invitational

Post by Rhiannon »

Congrats to the Ironton Golf team on winning their own invitational today. Ironton had a score of 305 beating West Union by 6 shots.

Also congrats to Nathan Kerns on being medalist today. He won in a playoff against a golfer(sorry can't remember his name, maybe golfmom can help me out)from West Union.

Good start to the season guys!

Also thanks to all those people who bought tee sponsors and donated food/drinks for the invitational. The boys and their parents really appreciated it.

Good luck against Greenup on Wednesday and at the Portsmouth Invitational on Thursday.

PINE GROVE — Not even Stephen King could dream up a scarier thought.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers were impressive in their first golf tournament of the season as they posted a 305 team score to win their invitational Monday.

Now for the scary part.

“A 305 is a good start,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns. “We still have a lot of work to do. We have better golf in us from top to bottom.”

Ironton’s total was six shots better than runner-up West Union at 311. Russell (Ky.) was next at 313 followed by Wheelersburg at 323, Gallipolis 326, Fairland 341, Jackson 342, Portsmouth Clay 344, Chesapeake 347, South Point 359, Portsmouth 369, and River Valley 420.

Speaking of a good start, senior Nathan Kerns shot a 71 and won medalist honors in a playoff hole. It was the second straight year Kerns has been medalist in the Ironton tournament.

“It was a good team effort. We played solid. I played solid,” said Nathan Kerns. “I didn’t putt that well, but I made a 20-footer in the playoff and that’s the one that counted.”

No. 2 man Andy Holtzapfel fired a 73 while freshman Josh Zornes made his first varsity match memorable with a 77 for Ironton. Instead of being nervous, Zornes was just the opposite.

“It was fun and it was good,” said Zornes with a grin.

Coach Kerns said he was proud of his team’s performance.

“Andy played really well, Josh Cooke played well with the exception of a few holes, and Josh Zornes really played well for his first time ever,” said coach Kerns.

“Nathan will tell you he didn’t play well, but a 71 is nothing to sneeze at.”

Cooke finish with an 84, Mason Weisgarber shot an 86, and Johnathan Williams carded a 90.

The Fighting Tigers host Greenup County, Ky., on Wednesday and visit Portsmouth on Thursday.

I remembered where it was finally but only after spending an hour trying to find it from an internet map. I have only passed it a 1000 times when I have travelled Rte 650. Anyway, I had already headed to a tennis match by the time I remembered. That was probably my only chance at pictures this season too. darn.
