shb05...I think you have great enthusiasm for wrestling at N-Y, but Jake may have to take a protection order out against you! ;-)

BucksIronman...I forgot about Gary! Yes, wasn't he on an Olympic team? I know he tried-out for it. What year was that? He still looks like he could compete on the mat.

nybucksmom... yes he was on the olympic team i think. i know that he was backing up the other heavyweight who he lost to in the qualifiers 1-2  he made it to state his senior year (his second year wrestling) but back then it was the "follow your man" bracket system, so he did not place, it would have been the equivalent of 8th place. he was the national greco champ and 1st or 2nd in the world in sombo(?) and various other types of wrestling. he wrestled for toledo then the army to go to the olympics. he then got in a car accident and damaged his knee so he could not compete.

Ace63 Athens has never had a state champ. They have had state placers but never a champ. The only schools in SE Ohio that can lay claim to having a state champ would be Warren, N-Y, Belpre and Lancaster. Hope I didn't leave any schools off, those are the ones that come to mind.

If you consider Sheridan and New Lex in SE Ohio which they should, since they wrestle in the southeast sectional then they are at the top of the list as well:

1. Sheridan
2. Warren Local
3. New Lex
4. Miami Trace, sudden rise to power
4. Belpre
5. NY

Some outstanding names that come to mind are:

Matt McCoy ( State champ ), Warren
Yinger (State champ), NY
Heath Hedulblute ( State champ ) Warren
Shriner ( two time state runner up ) Sheridan
Dustin Hawk ( state runner up ) New Lex
Ben Westbrook ( 2x SQ) Warren
Glancy ( 3rd ) Warren
Dress , Belpre
Young ( runner up) NY
Heldman, Marietta
Hansis, Marietta

Best teams that I can recall from the last 15 years:

Warren Local ( 89-90 ) 4th at states, boasted two state champs, and two more state placers
Marietta ( 99-00 ) boasted 4 state qualifiers, 2 placers
Sheridan ( 01-02 ) 5 SQ, couple of placers
NY ( last year )
Warren Local (02-03) 2 SQ, 4 district placers
