#4 Athens vs #5 Logan Elm 2/22

Post by VisionQuest »

Don’t know much about Logan Elm other than they are mostly sophomores and a smaller team. They are well coached and can shoot. LE and Athens didn’t play this year in the regular season, the 1st Time in a long time. LE had some upsets this season and held #2 seed FU to 30 points in a game this season. Athens is coming off 2 straight losses against Divison 1 and state ranked Logan and #2 Seed Jackson from the southeast sectional. Hopefully Williams is back in action, Athens is missing his quickness and speed. Thoughts???

Athens needs Williams to ensure their size will cause LE problems. (If Athens has no quickness their size advantage won’t matter much) LE does stuff well but Athens crashes the boards pretty good. This is a strange and tough to predict matchup. I could see all types of outcomes. Athens should win but that doesn’t always matter a ton against a well coached team.

Totally agree. It’s a really strange matchup.

If I had to make a prediction, I’d go with the seniors of Athens.

Teams who have beat Athens ... Waverly, Warren, Vinton, Logan ... they have one thing in common - they are well coached and move the ball! Just like Logan Elm.

I'm with Dan though, I'm thinking the senior laden team finds a way. But it's not going to be easy. Look for a lot of points scored inside the paint for the Dogs.

I look for the LE players to try and take Charges and get some of Athens players in foul trouble. Hopefully the Refs let them play.

Athens is definitely the favorite with a senior-laden team with a lot of height and athleticism. We'll see if Logan Elm can use its quickness, ball movement and defense to try and have a chance in the fourth quarter.

You had better be able to shoot and rebound if you want to beat LE. They give up some stuff, but are well coached and will sit in that zone and make you beat them.

Athens goes about 6'4, 6'4, 6'3 300lbs, 6'1 and 6'0.
The Zone D is not always affective against a team that is committed to going in to the post and knows how to attack it.
Gonna be a very interesting chess game Friday night.

4 sophmores and a junior start, then they bring 2 seniors and a junior off the bench.

Tallest starter is about 603 or 604, the juniors range from about 508 to 511.

Logan Elm does well when a team doesn't have a couple big men in the area of 6' 6 or more. Another thing Elm does good is out run slow teams. If you do not have good ball handlers they can eat you alive. It also helps to have a good bench when playing Elm. LE players play 2 to 3 inches taller than they are. It will not shock me if either one wins, but if it is more than 10 points it will.

If oddsmakers took your scouting report and applied it to Athens and who they are ... Logan Elm would probably be favored by 6 ... lol ... everything you mentioned does not favor the Dogs.

If they both go zone. This will be low scoring contest. I am going 48-40 Athens.
