Wheelersburg 70 South Webster 62 still a final ...

Wheelersburg 70
South Webster 62 a final

... D4 vs D3 ... Blevins vs Holden ... the Jeeps vs the 'Burg ... it doesn't get any better than that ... the Burg came into the game undefeated while the Jeeps were "staying afloat" 5-5 ... SW's marquee player in Shiloah Blevins was in his 2nd game back from injury while the burgs Tanner Holden, arguably the best player in SEOhio no matter the division, entered the contest averaging 29 ppg with a 50 point game on his resume' this season ... how could this one NOT be a good game ?

... for those who attended, it was an OUTSTANDING game ... both teams showed their strengths with Blevins and Holden ... BOTH teams showed that each was MORE THAN just Blevins and just Holden ... the Pirates opened the contest with 3 triples to open their scoring - 1 each by Trent Salyers, JJ Truit and Holden ... the Burg threw up 9 treys in the 1st quarter to set the tone for their offense for the game ... SW not be out done or out scored went 2/5 from downtown as all 5 Jeeps dented the napkin stats sheet ... South Webster 14 Wheelersburg 12 after one ... through quarter one, Holden let the game , the offense come to him, getting TEAM involved ... in the 2nd period Holden took HIS game to the game as the WHS big man showed his athletic ability in putting up 10 points - inside on putbacks, driving to the rim and hitting the midrange jumper ... the Jeeps were hit by foul trouble with Blevins getting called for 2 fouls in the first quarter and picked up his 3rd for the half ... Blevins played maybe 4 minutes of game time in the first 2 quarters which helped to allow Holden to "work on taking over the game" in the 2nd ... (one of the offshoots of having a key player to be sidelined with an injury is that it gives others on the TEAM the opportunity to expand their roles, to do what they would not be comfortable in doing on the court whether that is scoring, rebounding, upping their defense etc) in the 2nd the TEAM that had evolved with the Blevins injury showed , SW was/is a TEAM with multiple scorers - in the 2nd Trae Zimmerman dropped a 3 ball, Brayden Bockway added a triple and a duece, Blevins hit a trey before getting the 3rd foul and to close out the period Tanner Voiers picked up 2 transition baskets -WHS's Holden showed up and the TEAM on Rte 140 met the challenge ... South Webster 29 Wheelersburg 28 at intermission ... one of the things I noticed about Tanner Holden's game - his quickness, his athletic ability, his 6-5 frame allows him to be involved in every part of the game - handles the ball on the perimeter, can dribble drive to the rim, he is probably the quickest player I have seen off the floor for rebounds ... he IS a stat sheet stuffer ... he IS the "go to guy" for the Pirates ... the 3rd quarter saw Holden continue being the WHS offense hitting for 8 points ... Blevins started the 3rd qtr with a bench seat ... the Jeeps matched the Pirates/Holden shot for shot ... at 4:29 on the clock Blevins returned to the game 34-34 on the scoreboard ... the Jeeps took over the scoring Bockway hit for 2 triples/ Voiers 2 more triples Blevins with a 2 handed transition dunk ... the Jeeps had made a move with an 11-4 run to lead 45-38 with 2:11 on the clock ... Wheelersburg as much of one man show as they are with a player who puts up 30 ppg they have pieces - good pieces surrounding Holden - with SW hitting everything they put up Trent Salyers for WHS put a stop to the momentum by knocking down 2 straight 3's from downtown ... Wheelersburg 44 South Webster 48 end of 3 ... the 4th period was what it felt like from the Cheap Seats when a team has a D1 athlete who can literally "do it all" and has the size to "do it all" ... a 4 point cushion was a non-issue ... Holden hadn't been stopped from doing what he wanted to do all night - the 4th quarter is Holden time and when Holden does "his thing" the rest of the Burg players are talented enough to make you pay if you decide stopping Holden will stop the Pirates ... Holden hit for 11 points in the 4th - 2 fgs and 9/9 from the line ... he controlled the boards at both ends ... all night it seemed WHS got 2/3/4 shots on goal each trip down the court ... with Blevins playing about 2 1/2 qtrs for the game SW could not match Holden's size in the paint/on the boards ... Blevins added 4 pts for SW in the 4th , another 3 by Voiers was not near enough to stop Wheelersburg from taking and keeping the lead ... at 2:09 in the game WHS was up 62-57 ... the lead was made possible by the role players on WHS - Connor Mullins hit 8 points in the 4th (2 triples) , off the bench Ashton Clevenger added a big 3 pointer and a duece for his 5 points in the game ... down the stretch the Jeeps had to foul and Mr. Holden was the man with ball in his hands for the last 4 minutes of game clock ... Wheelersburg 70 South Webster 62 a final ...

Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - South Webster ...

Scoring ... Tanner Voiers 19, Brayden Bockway 16, Shiloah Blevins 11, Jacob ruth 8, Trae Zimmerman 8
3 Pointers ... 10/17 ... Brayden Bockway 4, Tanner Voiers 3, Trae Zimmerman 2, Shiloah Blevins 1
FTs .... 6/8
TOs ... 10
PnP ... 7 fgs/14 points in the paint
PnT ... 4 fgs/8 points in transition

... South Webster was beat on the boards ... when you look at the napkin stats a couple stats jump out at me after the game - only 7 fgs in the paint (Blevins on the bench) ... only 8 FTs taken (Blevins on the bench) ... with Blevins on the bench it made life easier for Holden to GET his 33 points/made it easier for WHS to control the boards and get the offensive boards that kept the burg scoring machine alive ... losing to WHS by 8 points without Blevins on the floor is incredible in itself ... it showed me that the Jeeps are an outstanding TEAM ... Zimmerman,Ruth,Bockway,Voiers - excellent players in their own right ... the Jeeps will make some noise in D4 in the post season ...

Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Wheelersburg

Scoring ... Tanner Holden 33 , Connor Mullins 10, Trent Salyers 9, JJ Truit 7, Matthew Miller 6, Ashton Clevenger 5
3 Pointers ... 7/26 ... Trent Salyers 3, Connor Mullins 2, JJ Truit 1, Tanner Holden 1
FTs .... 16/17
TOs ... 12
PnP ... 12 fgs/24 points in the paint
PnT ... 1 fgs/2 points in transition

... Tanner Holden IS the real deal ... the surrounding cast of characters are very good ... a lot of quickness on the Pirates team ... the Burg motto should be "In Holden We Trust " - to get his 30ppg, to get 10-15 rbs per game, to get to the FT line 10+ times per game, to handle the ball in crunch time ... he can handle the responsibility ... excellent players , very good TEAM for the Pirates Nation ...

Pretty cool to have pfloyd visit South Webster for a game. Thanks for the recap as well.

Couple of things:

-If Holden keeps this up and Burg gets to Regionals/State, he has to be a finalist for Mr. Basketball.

-Blevins is the difference between a sectional team and a Regional team. Just like last year though, Webster's team may benefit in the long run from him missing a few games.

-Secondary players played big for both teams. Ashton Clevenger was huge in 4th quarter for Burg. Bockway of Webster has become a must-guard for opposing defenses.

-Still believe if Truitt stayed at Webster, they'd be a state champ-caliber team this year in D4.*

Agree with most of this except I think Webster could use more experience at guard play. That’s where I think it may get them.
