Native Sons: D1 National Titles ?

Post by FANOSPORTS »

I've lived back and forth in my life in both WV and Ohio for all but about 4 years. Which state has the most Major D1 college National titles in college football with native born sons that were head coaches ?

WV- 19 Titles
Fielding Yost. - Fairview WV, 6 titles @ Michigan
John McKay. - Shinnston Wv. 4 titles @ USC
Nick Saban. - Worthington, Wv. 6 titles @ LSU/ Alabama
Jimbo Fisher. - Glen Falls, WV. 1 title @ Florida State
Ben Schwartzwalder. - Pt Pleasant, WV. 1 title @ Syracuse
Lou Holtz. - Follansbee, WV. 1 title @ Notre Dame

Ohio - 14 Titles
Les Miles. - Elyria, Oh. 1 title @ LSU
Ara Parseghian. - Akron, Oh. 2 titles @ Notre Dame
Urban Meyer. - Toledo/Ashtabula. 3 titles @ Florida/OSU
Jim Tressel. - Mentor Oh 1 title @ OSU
Paul Brown. -Norwalk/Massillon. 1 title @ OSU
Woody Hayes. - Clifton, Oh. 5 titles @ OSU
Bob Stoops. - Youngstown, Oh. 1 title @ Oklahoma

* Notes - Holtz grew up in East Liverpool (across the Ohio river)but was born in Wv*

I thought this was interesting with the population disparity and all :o

That sure is a good add on with the NFL.

A lot of good/great coaches from the two states. Not even including the lower divisions of NCAA Championship football teams.

Just from these two states, it's crazy to see how many national titles have come from such a small section of the country.

Right around 25% of the all-time titles from 2 states separated by the mighty Ohio. Pretty cool !!!!!

WV football in the Mon and Upper Ohio River valleys used to on occasion rival that in NW Ohio and Western Pa. Tough kids, tough towns, where football was an opportunity to escape the coal economy. Saban, Fisher, and Schartswalder's success was molded by the need to achieve
