Does your Conference have an Assigher for Varsity and JV ? Has this ever happened before ? Most of the teams is your Conference would I assume would play on Friday nites. Kind of hard to think that someone wouldn't be available on Sat.

For football, the MVL commissioner assigns varsity games (when an MVL team is the home team) only. The home team AD get officials for JV, FR, and JH.

My guess is that a crew cancelled and he couldn't find another crew. I'll try to get the scoop.

I do not recall ever hearing about this before in this area. I do know there is a shortage of officials in almost every sport in this area.

I was first going to say that mayby the AD had dropped the ball, but if it happened at that late an hour, I'm sure he tried and may have just not been able to find someone.

I know its probably to late now, but mayby the coaches from both schools could have acted as officals, and had like a controlled scrimmage or something. At least the kids would have still been able to play in gametype conditions.

I’ve done many lower levels games for years. Now you have to get certified and pay money to do that now. I get that for liability reasons, but many of us did this to help local schools. We had no desire to do varsity games and now there’s a shortage of officials in many sports. Money grabbing OHSAA wins again but hurts the players. It will get worse going forward like HS sports in general.

That's a shame, given that it's a Saturday game I would think they wouldn't have had issues finding a crew. I have to think someone really dropped the ball on this one, hate to hear that for the kids.

This is a problem that is getting worse. There are reasons to explain it: officials ranks are thinning, some might have to work, some don’t like thought of giving up Saturday, some physically can’t do a Saturday morning game after a Friday night game because they aren’t as young as they used to be, there might be pre-existing issues with the school’s involved where officials don’t want to go to a specific place and believe it or not, some officials think they are so good or mighty that they swear off JV, junior high games.

Yes they could have. I’ve seen this happen a couple of times. Works out to be better than not having a game at all. Those guys spend the week busting it on the scout team. Gotta get them their reps playing in their own offense & defense at some point.

Easy solution in bball - go back to 2 man crews

I Agree! I think most of the JV games in Girls and Boys only have 2 person crews.

Ok, I got the scoop.

1 of the guys on the crew recently had a heart attack. Another one had a conflict come up this week. They didn't want to play the game with only 2 officials. Tri-Valley AD took the list of area officials and called everyone on the list trying to find 1 or 2 more guys. John Glenn AD searched as well. No luck.

I'm not sure why they just didn't call it as a scrimmage and go with 2.

The commish of the MVL needs taken to the woodshed if he doesn't get this fixed. Shameful. Poor kids.

I knew that something like this happened a few years ago down in SEO. I think it was a traffic accident or something, a couple of officals were not able to make it to the game, I think mayby 1 or 2 officals, mayby a coach from each team, it may have been a 15-20 min delay, but they went right ahead and had the game. Was it perfect,No! But the kids were able to still play, and the Moms and Dads still were able to see them play.

One the biggest reasons are the total number of officials has been declining, there are classes all the time for the arm chair officials out there that don't realize the mass amount of difference in rule changes between the NFL NCAA and NfHS. The refs are not being paid near enough to put up with what hey have to on a daily basis.
