In the D1 women's soccer national championship, USC let their defense carry them the whole tournament. They defeated #1 West Virginia in the championship game 3-1.

Their road to the championship was dominated by their defense. In the first round, they defeated Eastern Washington 3-1. In the second round, they defeated Texas A&M in penalty kicks after getting their in a 0-0 tie. The third round they defeated Utah 1-0. The quarterfinal ended in another 1-0 win, where they defeated Auburn. Once again, in the semifinal, they recorded a 1-0 win, this time over Georgetown. And, of course, in the championship, they defeated West Virginia 3-1 in a dominating performance.

This was USC's first national championship in women's soccer. After this tournament had been dominated by the Big Ten over the last several years, the quarterfinals did not see even 1 quarterfinal team.

Although the D1 women's volleyball is still two weeks from being decided, I thought this was an interesting note in showing how dominate the Big Ten is in volleyball.

In the 3rd round, the Big Ten has 6 teams still remaining. Yes, you heard that right! 6 of the 16 teams in the 3rd round are from the Big Ten. Only 4 can advance to the quarters though if they win their matchups. As 4 of the teams play against each other. Here are the matchups in the 3rd round:

#1 Nebraska vs. #16 Penn State
Arizona vs. #8 Washington
#3 Wisconsin vs. Ohio State
Florida State vs. #6 Stanford
Creighton vs. #12 Michigan
#13 BYU vs. #4 Texas
#7 North Carolina vs. #10 UCLA
#15 Missouri vs. #2 Minnesota

6 teams are from the Big Ten
4 teams are from the PAC 12
2 teams are from the ACC
1 team from the MWC
1 team from the Big 12
1 team from the MVC
1 team from the SEC

The D1 men's soccer national championship is set for Sunday @ 2pm on ESPNU

There's nothing that says both teams deserved to be there like both of the semifinals matches going into double overtime.

#2 Wake Forest defeated #6 Denver, 2-1 in double overtime.

#5 Stanford defeated #9 North Carolina, but it took longer than double overtime, they had to go into penalty kicks, in which Stanford came out on top in PK's 10-9.

The Championship will be Wake Forest vs. Stanford.

Here is an interesting face:

After Youngstown State won their quarterfinal matchup in the FCS playoffs today against Wofford, there is a team from Ohio in the semifinals in FBS (Ohio State, FCS (Youngstown State) and D3 (Mount Union).

For the second consecutive year, Stanford has claimed the men's soccer national championship. It wasn't easy, it took more that double overtime to seal the win, but they did so in PK's defeating Wake Forest.

With just two more D1 national championships to go in the fall, the PAC12 has dominated the championships so far. They've won 4 of the 6 titles up to this point. Two championships remain: Football and Women's Volleyball.

For the first time in school history, Mary Hardin-Baylor has won the D3 football national championship (Stagg Bowl). This is also the first year since 2004 that neither Mount Union or Wisconsin-Whitewater has won the championship. Tonight they defeated Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10-7 in a low scoring affair to claim the title.

In the first FCS Semifinal, James Madison shocked North Dakota State, 27-17. This will be the first time since 2010 that North Dakota State won't win the title.

The other semifinal will be tomorrow when Youngstown State battles Eastern Washington

Stanford! That's who took home the national title trophy in women's volleyball last night. #6 Cardinal defeated #4 Texas 3-1 to take home the championship. This is their first title since 2004 and their 7th overall title in women's volleyball. This is also the first time since 2012 that a team from the Big Ten did not win the title.
