GAHS, River Valley split twinbill

Devils win 1st, 6-5, lose 2nd, 10-9
First Game
Gallipolis and River Valley split a doubleheader on the Eastman Ballfield in Centenary on a cold, windy and rainy Saturday afternoon.

Gallipolis won the first contest, 6-5. River Valley captured the nightcap, 10-9.

Gallipolis is now 4-2 overall (1-0 SEOAL). River Valley improved to 1-2 overall. The Raiders lost a non-league tilt to Pt. Pleasant Thursday. Gallipolis will host Marietta in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game Monday at 5 p.m. River Valley will travel to South Point Monday for an Ohio Valley Conference battle at 5 p.m.

In Saturday’s first game, GAHS built up a 6-0 lead behind sophomore hurler Jimmy Clagg, but the Raiders rallied to cut the deficit to 6-5 with five big runs in the fifth inning and had a chance to win the game in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded when Caleb Warnimont stopped the uprising for a save to preserve the Blue Devils lead and victory.

When the Raiders chased Clagg in the fifth, Bryant Bokovitch hurled one-third of an inning and was replaced by Warnimont in the top of the sixth. Clagg allowed 5 runs (three earned) on two hits. He fanned seven and walked four. Bokovitch issued two walks while Warnimount allowed one hit, no runs, six strikeouts and two walks.

Senior Jacob Brown went the distance for the Raiders. He gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits, fanned three and walked five.

GAHS plated three runs in the first inning, and three more in the fourth inning. RVHS scored all five of its runs in the fifth inning. Gallipolis had six runs on six hits and made one error. RVHS had five runs on three hits and committed three errors.

Caleb Warnimont, Russ Dennison and Tyler Davis had two hits apiece for GAHS. Drew Young and Dennison had RBIs. For River Valley, Cody Wimmer, Jacob Brown and Nick Jeffers all had safeties for the Raiders. Wimmer and Brown had single RBIs.

Second Game

In the nightcap, RVHS jumped on Blue Devil starter Tyler Eastman for five runs (four earned) three hits in one and one-third innings and never looked back. Eastman struck out one and walked three for GAHS.

Bryant Bokovitz relieved Eastman. In one and two thirds innings, Bokovitz allowed two earned runs, four hits, before giving the ball to Warnimount who allowed three earned runs on four hits in four innings. Warnimount fanned nine and walked one.

Brandon Smith started for River Valley and was credited with the victory. Smith, in four innings, allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. He fanned three and walked five. Cody Wimmer relieved Smith in the fourth. In three innings Wimmer allowed two earned runs on one hit. He fanned one and walked five.

Gallipolis had nine runs on nine hits and made two errors. River Valley had 10 runs on 12 hits and had four errors.

For GAHS, Casey Denbow, Russ Dennison, and Tyler Davis had two hits each. Tyler Eastman had a one-run triple in the fourth inning. Clagg and Warnimont also had safeties for GAHS. Warnimont and Clagg had two RBIs, Dennison and Denbow one each.

For RVHS, Tyler Noble had three hits and two RBIs,Trey Noble two hits and one RBI, Cody Wimmer two hits and one RBI, Jacob Brown one hit and one RBI, Nick Jeffers two safeties and
Brandon Smith two hits and two RBIs.

I heard RV is not very good this year and their coach is new. How did this happen?

After falling behind 6-0 following 3 innings in the first game, RVHS simply outplayed the Blue Devils the rest of the day.

Nice of coach Corvin to bring back last years seniors and have them throw out the first pitch
