Sorry to say that the 10u thunder team lost today to the Carolina Stars by 14 (i believe)

but Good New for the thunder is that the 8u just defeated Idiania's Finest in the National Championship Game.

The Thunder had a great year with the
8u winning nationals
9u team finishin 9th in the nation
10u still competing in the final 12
11u placed fifth in the nation
and the 15u placed 5th at nationals.

Way to go thunder! and good luck to the 10s!

Hey, we just got back after spending some time at the beach after the tournament. I didn't have any access to the internet while we were gone. The WV Thunder 10u girls team ended up 5th in the 10u AAU Nationals at Disney that had 60 teams participating from all across the U.S.

Our girls won our pool by going 3 - 0. The first two games of pool play were not close as the girls beat teams from Nashville, TN and then another from Florida. Our last pool play game we beat a very good team from Georgia, the Georgia Stars, who won their 10u State Tournament and had a girl close to 6'0". We ended up winning that game by three points.

Our first game in the Championship Tournament was not close as we beat a team from Missouri, the Missouri Valley Magic, 35 - 13. In game two we played a tremendously athletic team from Alabama, the Birmingham Blazers, and came away with a 5 point win, 44 - 39.

Our third game in the tournament we ran into a buzzsaw in the North Carolina All-Stars. We just didn't match up well with this team as they had two girls that went 6'1 1/2" (no joke) and another couple of strong inside players. They beat us 44 - 30 and went on to finish 3rd overall. The game was tied at half and we were only down by 4 going into the 4th quarter but they were able to pull away down the stretch.
We then played another team from Georgia, the Celtics, and after leading the entire game we held on to win by one point, 40 - 39. In our second loser's bracket game last Friday we beat a team from Philadelphia, the Comets, by 12 points 40 - 28. The ninth game of the tournament on Saturday would be our last one as we came up two points short to last year's National Champion, Indiana's Finest, 35 - 33. In that game we were up early and then allowed them to go on a 16 - 2 run to take a 19 - 10 lead at half. However, the girls battled back and took a one point lead a couple of different times in the 4th quarter but we just didn't finish on top.

The Fairfax Stars from Virginia won the tournament by beating a team from Indiana (ISSA Elite) that was coached by Damon Bailey. His daughter plays on this team. Our Thunder team played ISSA Elite earlier this year in a tournament in Indianapolis and they beat us by 14.

The WV Thunder 10u team went 45 - 11 this AAU season and was the Ohio AAU State Champion and also won several other tournaments including three events in which they played up in the 11u age division. Seven of the losses were to teams that finished in the top seven at the Nationals and a couple other ones were to 11u teams. We also had seven wins against teams that finished in the top seven at the Nationals. Congatulations girls on a tremendous year and we are very proud of you. Here is the roster of the team: Lee Adkins and Abby Haislop from Oak Hill, Courtney Blanton from South Webster, and Lexie Doddridge from Peebles. From Kentucky there is Logan Fraley from Boyd County and Kelsey Stumbo from East Carter. There was only one girl on the 10u Thunder from WV and that was Rachel Lee from Huntington. We did pick up a couple of girls from Cincinnati who went to the Nationals with this team and did contribute to the success.

It's great for southern Ohio to see so many girls now playing AAU basketball in all ages with the WV Thunder, Southern Ohio Magic, and also Team Ohio. The Ohio Express also gets some girls from southern Ohio as well. It will only increase the talent level in our region and help make high school girls' teams that much stronger.

I'm confused on the "10u" age classification. I know that at least one of these girls listed will be in the 7th grade this fall. That would put her at 12 or 13 so even if the cut off date is Jan. 1st she would be 11.

As long as their birthday is July 1st or after they can qualify to play on the younger team. It's rare to find kids with late birthdays like that where parents do not hold them back gradewise but it does happen.

I totally understand your confusion digger. Until this year, AAU girls always used a cut-off date (ADD - Age Determining Date) of January 1. For this past (2008) AAU season they changed the ADD from January 1 to July 1.

Let's take last year's (2007) 10u age group that was using a January 1 ADD. When it changed to July 1 for this year (2008), all girls who had a birthday between January 1 and June 30 would have had to move up to the 11u age group. Any girl who was playing in 2007 as a 10u, was then able to stay at the 10u age group for this year. This would have been the case no matter what age it occurred in whether it was 9u, 10u, 11u, 12u, etc......

AAU however did not change the age divisions so to speak but they may address that for the 2009 season. In the 10u age level this year it was mainly set up for girls in the 5th grade who will be 6th graders this fall. However, just like you mentioned this did not include 100 % of the players as some girls would be entering the 7th grade this fall and still be eligible to play at the 10u this past year in 2008 if they had a birthday after July 1.

The way it turned out this year in the Nationals in the 10u, there were some girls who may have actually been 12 years old if they had a birthday after July 1. This was the case in all age groups and not just 10u. Some girls could have actually been 2 years older than the age group they were playing in at the Nationals.

To help correct this issue, there is a good possibility that AAU will actually re-classify the age divisions for next year. If that occurs then this years 9u will be labeled as 11u next year. This years 10u will move up to 12u and this years 11u will move up to 13u and so on..... If they do this, it wouldn't change who the girls are playing against as it would be the same group as they played against this past AAU season. The only thing it would change would be the age divisions.

Hope this helps to clarify your confusion. You are correct about the WV Thunder team and having a girl who will be in the 7th grade this year. There were actually three girls on this team who will be in the 7th grade this fall: one from Oak Hill, one from South Webster, and one from Huntington, WV. This was the case on many teams in Orlando this year in the fact that they may have had just a handful of girls on their teams entering 7th grade this fall.

Gotcha. I think every travel sport has a different set of rules pertaining to age. Very confusing. Thanks.
