Have you seen Fairland??

Don't get me wrong, VC is VERY good! But Fairland is a legit state title contender in D3.

Didn't know you moved up spots for beating a team below you

Who are you supposed to beat when you are #2? They went to Athens and blew them out.

Fairland was one of my favorite teams to watch last year...I have not seen them this year but how are they so much better than last year? (Asking as I don't know)

You do realize Fairland is probably a state team and Vinton has a bunch of teams in the region just as good.

They started 5 sophomores last year and nearly made the State, but blew a 10 point lead against Lynchburg in Regionals (who then went to state)

Returned everyone, and are now Juniors.

I'm not saying that's not a good win for VC. I saw Athens play at The Big E Classic and they are very good but Fairland hasn't lost and just beat the WV AAA state runner-up. Don't see why they should lose a spot. Makes for a good argument though.

I'm one of those old fashioned guys who don't like to over credit teams, but Fairland is one of the better teams I've seen come along in awhile. They remind me of the 06 South Webster team in that they had so many ways they could beat you -- and a great combination of talent and discipline.

I'll be very, very shocked if Fairland doesn't make the State this year.

Fairland is the best team ive seen so far and its not even close. Vinton is a good team but they don't have the athletes of Fairland.

Fairland lost in the District Finals to Lynchburg 73-62

VC may not have the athletes, but they have the depth, teamwork, experience, and coaching to hang with anyone in our region. Fairland should be #1, but VC is outstanding.

... come on I92 !!! Vinton County solidified their hold on #2 for sure - good "W" on the road vs Athens - I was there to put eyes on VC ... Coach Combs' squad IS the real deal ! better than last years team ... more athletic , 6 legitimate ball handlers , strong athletes with and without the ball, Athens pressured VC the entire 2nd half - a few TOs from the press but most were in the half court (9 TOs for the game) ... I'm not sure I have seen 4 better scorers/shooters - Speakman, Jones, Bartoe, Naylan Yates ALL shoot the 3 ball - can flat out light you up ... ALL 4 can take you off the dribble and get to the rim ... throw in Neven Yates, Antonia Mendes - that's 6 guards as good as I have seen all season ... Eli Griffith in the paint for VC was impressive as well - he does a more than good job in the paint at both ends ... Coach Combs' & Co. are #2 and getting better with each game ... BUT Fairland will still be number one until they slip up - they have some big time nonconference games to play ... the goal for Coach Speed & Co. is the Big Show in C'bus this year AND next ...

... Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Athens ...

Scoring ... Griffin Lutz 20,Nick Lutz 12, Justin Hynes 8, Dalton Cozart 8, Logan Maxfield 6, Robert Dickelman 4, Treyce Albin 2
3 Pointers ... 1/7 ... Cozart 1
FT's ... 11/16
TOs ... 18
PntP ... 38
Transition points ... 4

Athens doesn't have the overall team that Vinton County can put on the floor ... the scorers/shooters aren't there ... Griffin Lutz is Griffin Lutz he will get his 20 or more but he doesn't have the supporting cast ... Athens has beaten VC 3 straight times in McArthur ? - not sure that will happen this year ...

... Pfloyd's Official "unofficial" Napkin Stats - Vinton County ...

Scoring ... Tristan Bartoe 24, Derick Jones 23, Naylan Yates 15, Jake Speakman 7, Eli Griffith 6, Bryce Damron 3
3 pointers ... 9/18 ... 50% on the night ... 5/10 in the first half ... 4/8 in the 2nd half ... Jones 3, Bartoe 3, Yates 2, Speakman 1
FTs ... 13/19
TOs ... 9 - outstanding under the pressure that Athens threw up in the 2nd half ...
PntP ... 36
Transition Points ... 6

... VC has 4 players who can and will during the season put up 20 points on any given night AND might just do it at least once on the same night during the season ... Athens focused on Naylan Yates tonight - he still got a quiet 15 ... Speakman is as good as anyone on the floor and will be that 4th scorer for VC - when most teams are looking for 3 scorers Vinton Co has 4 !!! ... fun to watch !!! I'll definitely be getting out to see the Vikings again soon ...

Going back to Eastern Pike and Clay, Eastern defense was the difference. To hold Clay to 14 first half points was impressive. As mentioned Clay's Gilliland only had 2 pts at half and I was surprised they didn't run more sets to try to get him open looks from the outside as he was 2-3 from 3's on the night. Rebounding was huge as Eastern rebounded as a team (esp Miller) while only Gilliland had any rebounds for Clay. Hinze will help as Riffe and Gilliland never got subbed and were spent but if Eastern's sophs of Leist and Miller continue to play at the level they did in this game, if will be tough for Clay to win the rematch. Coach Barrick had his team ready to play and made the right adjustments.

In days of yore...you would have trek the steep stairs of the bleachers, search in the dusty and shadowy corners of the top row to find Pfloyd. There you would find an aged man scratching feverishly on his note pad and napkins. A man so intense his eyes gazed and dilated even in the dim light, beads of sweat refusing to fall from his brow because of his intense concentration. Your pillage to the top row was a risk of humiliation, his mood was as mysterious as his basketball intellect; however, in hopes to kiss the ring and bask in his knowledge was well worth the risk. But not many have tried, there have been tales of those that have dared and bravely come away forever changed. Ty Webb. 93Bulldog. Ironman92. danicalifornia. Legends, these brave men that have met the great and powerful Pfloyd.

Well...not today. I found Pfloyd sitting at a scorers' table with his three laptops, a scorebook, an iPad, and his smart phone. The man has gone corporate on us. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't sponsored by Apple.

It is always great to see you, my friend. I hope to see at more Vinton County games.

Lol .. I figured Green would hang for a while, possibly 12-15 point spread. They have a couple sophomores who can get it done on both ends of the floor.. It appears Minford was on a mission and made a statement.
I still believe Green is better than some of the teams above the end table.

Got to watch your Trojans before our game Saturday. Thought your boy played well. Great comeback win with great defense in 2nd half. Would have loved to have seen Tobias Jr playing also for the Trojans.

Agreed...Green will be in a lot of games this year, but might not win a lot of them as SOC I is tough with a lot of senior-heavy teams. Next year though, Green will be near the top of the league with Eastern and Western.*

Thanks.. Yes I'd love to see my nephew with us as well.. Good luck to Minford this year. Matthew Gullett is starting the season very well and will be a force this season. I believe he put up close to 20 in one quarter during our scrimmage.
