Post by pfloyd »

Another exciting year of hoops Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line! the rankings are only for the regular season, as we know anything can happen in the post season and usually does ... My thanks to all of the SEOPs fans who post as well as all who read the weekly rankings without posting - it's all good ... I will be putting together the Preseason Rankings for the 2024-25 season after the Post Season play ends in March ... I won't post them until October or so when the football season is winding down ... New Divisions for next season! 7 divisions??? wow ... not sure if what we have at the Convo continues with all of the teams and games that will take place in the post season next season - it would be a shame to lose the Convo due to too many games based on the divisional play - sectionals? only district and/or regional play? only regional play at the Convo? are they moving everything to the Fair Grounds (ugggggggh a horrible venue to watch games as a fan imo) ... so many questions to be answered this off season ... we'll all have to sit back and watch ...

Pfloyd has some life changes approaching ... after 42 years of doing my "day job" I will be retiring from the Logan Hocking School District/Intervention Specialist/Work Study Coordinator at Logan High School ... not sure what that will mean other than for awhile I will be able to get to more games! I'm 12 games into my 3rd napkin stat book (72 games this season before the Sectional/District/Regional action -fingers crossed for some State final 4 games) ... Mrs. Pfloyd keeps giving me house listings for South Carolina ! that's REALLY Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line!!! - so next season is up in the air ... we'll hope to see everyone this post season SOMEWHERE in the SouthEast District for sectional play, for sure at the Convo for district & regional action and with any luck - getting one of our 71 teams to The Show in Dayton ... the 2nd life change or let's hope it's not too life changing as it's time for Pfloyd to head for the James at OSU in Columbus on March 5th for my yearly visit to the oncologist - all has been good! - hard to believe it's been since 2010 that pfloyd started the battle vs Stage 4 melanoma ... Everything has been stable/clear since 2016 - I have no reason to think that THAT has changed ... it's always nerve racking though thinking about the "What if's" ...

Safe travels this week and through the 3 weeks of the Convo and Beyond to Dayton! thank you again ...

The man. The myth. The legend. PFloyd.

Imo, the most basketball knowledgeable person this side of the state. (Even if he thinks I’m fat)

You can get one of those little air stream trailers this summer and hitch it up to Westy and bring Mrs. Floyd on the road to 100 games next season. Enjoy that retirement

... I usually get to all but 1 night of games at the Convo (March 14th will be regional matchups this season - I have a school event taking me away as it has for many many years) ... I wouldn't put that 100 games off the table for next season - as I won't have to worry about working the next day after games on the river or West of Rte 23 ... all games with good matchups are on the table no matter the day of the week - I'm looking forward to it LOL ...

... working on my Convo seating again this year, I have my sectional pass on my phone so I'm good to go for this weeks Sectional play Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights ...

There are 2 or 3 teams in each division that can claim to be the best in the Southeast. However, it's possible that they may not win district. So many factors on a given night can impact the outcome of a game. Sickness, injury, personal issues, unusual foul trouble, just a strangely bad shooting night vs. an opponent especially "on" that night, etc. All of these can impact a game where the better team doesn't win on that specific night. That's the way sports has always been.

... as we go into the post season and start looking at NEXT season ...Who are the teams that everyone feels will be in the upper 25 teams in Southern/Southeast Ohio next season? teams that are young, with solid players that are growing physically and skill wise :

Some of the obvious ones:

Warren - only losing 1 senior - albeit a BIG loss in Trent Taylor ... Warren has an-8-9 man rotation THIS season, lots of varsity experience returning and size! will still have size with Wells/Lupardus and on the JV's some names from the past in Hilverding/Venham showing up ... Stadelman/Sealey/Cochran/Barry/Cressey/Anthony ... will the loss of Taylor cost them the preseason #1?

New Lexington - only losing 1 senior ... 4 returning starters in Ratliff (fr)/Isaiah Stephens/Stenson/Hanson/ off the bench Eli Stephens/Thresher/Adam 18-4 this season

Jackson - only losing 1 senior in Boston Campbell - excellent group of returning starters - sophs Jenkins/Woodard/Seimetz/Wolford/Jax Carroll ..freshmen CJ Crabtree/Joel Carroll etc. this group is growing NOW, will be physically so much different next year as juniors & sophs

Meigs returns a bunch of talent including jr. big man Dustin Vance / Tracy/Dewees/ Cayden Gheen

Marietta loses big men Alex Kendall/Izak Knighten and PG Lieras- Kelley BUT have a great nucleus with Britton/Wittekind/Jones/Hawkins - solid Coaching staff

Gallia Academy returns a lot of talent& size Mock/Camden/Rathburn/Blair/Toler/Hammons

Hillsboro (only 2 seniors) returning Tate Davis & Co.

Minford returns the Big 3 in Montgomery/Shoemaker/Kayser ...Glockner with lots of PT on varsity as the 1st man off the bench this season

Wheelersburg with their own super sophs in McGraw/Rucker/Bivens/Adkins/Evans ..jrs Mowery

Western Pike ... Drew Haggy/Kam James/Cutter Clay/Foster Davis some of the returnees

Manchester will be a team to watch as well - returning Hayslip/Roberts/Crabtree/Applegate/Bayless off of the 8 man rotation from this season

Circleville returns Thornsley/Kline/Jenkins 6-4/Kirk 6-5/Reicheldefer off of Coach Carpenter's 8 man rotation ...

Ironton returning Terry/Schreck/Cotton/Layne

Unioto ... Perkins/Hoops/Fitch/Cuttright returning starters good nucleus to build with the JV team coming this year

Zane Trace ... Landen Jarrell, Rippeth, Landon Robinson,Noah Huston, Gunnar McCullough, Larson returning with varsity experience with Jarrell/Rippeth/Robinson/Huston to be 4 of the 5 starters

Belpre ... Nasaith Spencer (PG)/Haiden Tabler/Chris Copen/Junior Bass (6-5)

South Webster ... Roberts/White/Shupert/Mault/Barnard = all significant varsity minutes every game ... off the JV McClintic/McGraw/Stephens

Fairland ... Buchanan/Lochow/Fransen/Keegan Smith is a good starting point with a great JV squad ...

Eastern Brown ... Barber/Walkup/Edmiston/Murphy/Koehler great group to open the season with ...

... just jotting down teams off the top of my head who I KNOW will be in the hunt for the top 25, Elite 8 rankings in the preseason ... tho have I left out ??? Sheridan, Waverly has lots of size/young talent in the Myers brothers etc., North Adams? Chesapeake returns a lot - Kerns/Plantz/Perkins/Phillip Thacker/ the talented 6-3 Kazee (fr)/ Skeens /Harris ... Portsmouth Notre Dame? What do the Titans return Barbarits/Metzler/Thomas/Phillips/Bradford??? ...

... others Logan Elm? Westfall? Vinton County loses A LOT ?????????????????

The teams in the shac return most of their guys next year. North Adams graduates copas and Hesler but return a strong junior class. Eastern probably returns the most. For the rest of the big school, Peebles, LC and West Union return everyone.
In the small school Fayetteville, Manchester and Fairfield all lose some key senior leadership to graduation. Fayetteville and Manchester has more experience than Fairfield next year but Fairfield has some good talent coming up in their freshmen class, all depends on how they develop. Whiteoak and Ripley both return most of their teams, Whiteoak will have more upside but still think they will be on the outside looking in for a league title.

I was about on the $ from my shac preseason predictions this year from your preseason rankings Pfloyd.

... thanks BallDontLie on your rundown of what the SHAC teams will be fielding next season! with my retirement comes the ability to get to SHAC games DURING the week next season! I'm excited about that opportunity ... I enjoy meeting some of the SHAC coaching staffs over the years - Coach Arey for Peebles, Coach Beulcer for EB, Coach Copas for NA/Coach McCormick for NA, Coach Kingsolver for Manchester ... haven't met them all in the SHAC but I'm working on it! next season ...

The SVC still will go through Unioto/Zane Trace next year, although a lot of that could be on who gets the ZT job

Adena loses 4 of their 5 starters and 7 total seniors. Lucas King nearly averaged a double-double for them this year as a sophomore, so they’ll go through him. Decent 8th grade and JV groups, so even if next year is a step back, it shouldn’t be for long

Westfall graduates 4 of 5 starters, but will have Joe Wray for the whole season next year, plus Bryan Craig had a really good freshman season. Pretty good lower level teams, including a couple of guys who had to step in and play against Piketon last night. They’ll be middle of the pack with a chance to jump in the top half

Piketon loses their best player, but return everybody else. They lost a bunch of tight games this year, so I could see a record flip for next year and a top 3 finish, with a possibility of pushing Unioto/ZT

Paint Valley was much better in the second half of the season, but still will have very little depth outside of their top 3 players

Southeastern should be better, only graduate one and he missed most of the season. Undersized, but they’ll be better IMO

Huntington will keep getting better. They have some talented underclassmen, just have to get the best athletes out to help in the depth department. Hirsch and Manson will be a nice duo for the next couple of years

Marietta will be good again next year despite losing those three seniors if they can keep Gardner around. Had heard a few weeks ago that he could be inline for the head-assistant coach job at Findlay if the current one is let go.
