Marietta 69 Meigs 40 a final ...

Marietta 69
Meigs 40 a final

... Meigs entered this one at 14-2 , traveling to play a proven quality team in Marietta (15-2 coming in ) ... the Marauders entered this one down 2 starters and a 3rd in Brayden Stanley nursing an ankle issue ... "soooooo you're saying we have a chance???" - no ... not really ... Meigs plays hard, but when a team like Meigs is trying to move bodies in and out, adjust to new roles left open by the walking wounded ... vs a TEAM like Marietta who has all of the cast of characters healthy, knowing their roles, understanding who "HIM" is on the team - not much of a chance on the road at Sutton Gymnasium ... when I last talked to Coach Warner of Marietta when he & Coach Gardner were at Meigs scouting the Marauders for this one - our discussion touched on the "change in the culture" at Marietta ... if you attended the Warren @ Marietta game or last night's game vs Meigs all you have to do is look at the stands - the fans have returned, the YOUNGSTERS have returned as they get front row seats, courtside to watch the game & dream of one day being a Tiger ... a job well done by the Marietta coaching staff ... AND they play good music !!! Ozzy, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc. !!!

... as the build up for games takes place in the pregame, records are thrown around 14-2 vs 15-2 - has to be a good game !!! strength of schedule counts along with having all of the parts that got Meigs to the 14-2 record counts - you can't beat "A MARIETTA" with walking wounded players ,minus 2 starters ... games are 32 minutes of playing time long ... the better team in this situation will get the W especially when the better team is mature enough to understand who "HIM" is - Alex Kendall is "HIM" on this team and would be on any team I can think of Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line ... last night's game was relatively "sloppy" by both teams - the opening quarter had Meigs with more turnovers than fg's 5 to 4 while Marietta was turned over 6 times to 7 fgs ... the Tigers of Coach Gardner were in tact - 8 man rotation - weapons literally at all positions/and points off the bench ... this 15-2 TEAM "ain't" losing this one even with a 16 turnover night ... Elyjah Lieras-Kelley carried the Tigers thru their 6 turnovers as the two guard took it to the rim for 3 buckets on drives and a 4th fg on a transition bucket (8pts) ... inside the paint 6-8 senior, Findlay bound, Alex Kendall gave support with 2 pts on the blocks and a putback bucket (4pts) Izak Knighten added 2pts in the paint to round out the Tiger scoring ... the Marauders with 3 regular starters and 2 "next men up" got 4pts from Landen Dewees ... 6-5 jr. Dustin Vance looked to attack the rim, taking it right at Kendall for 2 pts at the rim and 1 for 2 from the FT line (3pts) ... the usually strong 3 point attack on the perimeter by Meigs was held to 1/4 from downtown as Cayden Gheen had the only Meigs trey in the quarter (3pts) ... not a "pretty" quarter by either team by any stretch ... Marietta 14 Meigs 10 after 1 ... the opening period was that "feeling out" quarter -How was the opponent going to attack on offense? when you have an Alex Kendall, a Zaiden Wittekind, Izak Knighten, Elyjah Lieran-Kelley , how were the Marauders going to defend the rim? and the perimeter? ... in the 2nd Meigs continued to turn the ball over, 5 more TOs in the quarter and only 1 fg - an "and 1" by freshman Owen Tracy (3pts) ... the only other points for Meigs was 1/2 FT shooting by Cayden Gheen ... 4pts in the quarter offensively for the Meigs ... Marietta did "Marietta things" - Kendall picked up 2 more fgs in the paint on the blocks while getting another offensive board for a putback 2pts/6 pts in the quarter/10 pts in the half ... with Kendall inside the Tigers owned the paint - check ... aerial attack? in the 2nd Coach Gardner opened up the offense as Meigs "had to defend the rim" ... MHS getting 3 treys - Knighten with the first/ followed by Lieras-Kelley's points numbers 9,10,11 with his own triple ... off the bench Brayden Jones hit the Tigers 3rd trey in the quarter to open a 16 point lead going into the half ... Marietta 30 Meigs 14 at the half ... Meigs didn't have enough weapons to make this one a game, even a 12 point offensive quarter had the Marauders losing ground - Brayden Stanley off the bench hit his first 3 ball and added 2/2 from the charity stripe (5pts) ... Dustin Vance with 2 buckets down low (4pts) .... Gheen another 1/2 from the line and Conlee Burnem added his only fg of the game on a drive to the rim (2pts) ... Meigs through 3 was 2/9 from behind the arc ... without the perimeter threat/the 6-5 Vance guarded effectively all game by the 6-8 Kendall for Tigers struggled to get to the rim (3 fgs for the game ... 4/9 from the line ... 10 pts) ... Marietta HAS players, players who can score the ball but they also have a TEAM that KNOWS they have THE best player on the floor in almost every game they play - 6-8 ALex Kendall ... maturity as a team - knowing what you have, not forcing shots, letting HIM do HIM things - Kendall got to the rim for 3 more fgs 6pts in the paint, stepped out for a 3 ball (9pts) ... Jones took a Meigs turnover the other way for 2pts ... Wittekind added 4pts on drives to the rim (4pts) ... 18-12 Tigers in the 3rd ... more separation ... Marietta 48 Meigs 26 after 3 ... the outcome of this one was a formality ... Marietta continued to play D, turned Meigs over 6 times in the 4th (19 for the game) ... Meigs took more and made more 3 pointers 3/7 from downtown (freshmen Owen Tracy 2 triples in the qtr & Brayden Stanley a trey - 2 for the game) , Vance went 3/6 from the line and Griffin Cleland picked up his only fg of the game with a midrange jumper ... the Tigers played offensively from their defense taking 3 of the Meigs 6 turnovers to the house including a complementary - seemingly every game - Zaiden Wittekind transition, 2 handed slam - the sophomore ended the night with 4 pts in the qtr/9 on the night ... Kendall added 2 fgs down on the blocks to go with 4/5 shooting from the line (27 points on the night for the big man in the middle) ... Brayden Jones continued to be money off the bench as he added trey #2 on the night in the 4th (10pts) ... Owen Riley with a transition 2 pts ... 6-4 soph Braiden Plaugher made the most of his PT adding 2/2 from the free throw line ... Marietta 69 Meigs 40 a final

I'm sure no one said that MM. I didn't say that at all - going into a big game vs a team like Marietta - it's tough enough to compete when all barrels are loaded ... but to try to compete when you are down 2 starters and Stanley isn't at 100% ... trying to figure out the best lineups and roles for everyone while doing it vs the 1 or 2 best team in SEO - usually not going to end well ...

Probably the kind of game Meigs needed to see where they have to be in order to compete at the district level. Are those two out for the season? Could provide a big boost if not.

If all the new numbers $$$$$ end up in his favor a certain someone will make sure your team doesn’t suck next season. Cross your fingers.
