The ninth annual CatFish Challenge pitting the basketball teams from East Muskingum against the basketball teams from Cambridge School District was won by the John Glenn Little Muskies on the strength of the junior varsity and varsity team victories.

With games between third, fourth, fifth and sixth worth one point, seventh, eighth and freshman games worth two points, the junior varsity game worth three points and the varsity game worth five points, the district that earns the most points takes home the traveling trophy.

In addition, a $250 scholarship is awarded to a player from each team. This year’s recipients are Tyler Steinhoff from John Glenn High School and Parker Long from Cambridge High School.

On the court, the Bobcats took an early 3-1 lead in the challenge by winning the third, fifth and sixth grade games. The third graders won 20-13, the fifth graders won 30-19 and the sixth graders 47-2. The John Glenn fourth graders won a squeaker 18-16.

The Muskies came back with an overtime victory in the seventh-grade game to even Challenge at 3-3 and won the freshmen game 33-13. Cambridge won the eighth-grade game in another close game, 35-34. After the first seven games, the score was even at 5-5.

John Glenn won the junior varsity game 41-36 to take an 8-5 lead heading into the varsity game which was won by John Glenn giving the Muskies a 10-5 victory.

“The CatFish Challenge is a cool event,” Cambridge coach Kyle Pertuset said. “I think it’s great for the community and great for youth basketball. I hope it continues and we can get the trophy back here where it belongs.”

John Glenn coach Eric Sheck agreed with most of what Pertuset said.

“It is a pretty cool rivalry thing that they here,” Sheck said. “I know the younger kids really enjoy getting to play on the high school court. It was just a shame that both teams couldn’t have won it. Cambridge played really hard tonight, we were fortunate to win and take home the trophy.”
