Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star Basketball Classic

Post by 4thgoal »

PARKERSBURG — The Ohio boys of head coach Chris Rider (Logan) kept the Buckeye State on the winning end as host West Virginia suffered a lopsided 146-107 defeat in the 18th annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star Basketball Classic here Friday inside Parkersburg South’s Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

The Buckeye trio of MVP Tanner Holden (Wheelersburg), who is off to Wright State, along with David Black of Meadowbrook and Jackson’s Cooper Donaldson were just too much for W.Va. head coach Mike Fallon’s (Parkersburg South) squad.

“We needed to make another 10 3s,” quipped Fallon after the game, who said he was pleased with the support shown for the event, which featured Parkersburg South’s Seth Fallon topping Parkersburg Big Red Kionte Peacock in the 3-point competition with Peacock besting Ripley’s Isaac Putnam in the slam dunk contest.

While several players got in on the dunk barrage, which included Warren’s Clay Miller (13 points), Holden put on a quite a show with his athleticism. Along with knocking down a pair of trifectas, Holden finished with a game-high 37 points and added 15 rebounds.

W.Va. wanted to put up 100 3-point attempts on the night and they did. However, the hosts were 24 of 111 as Mountain State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Bunky Brown of George Washington was the MVP after leading W.Va. with 15 points.

Black used his size inside to finish with 24 points and a monster double-double thanks to his game-high 20 caroms. Donaldson also had a nifty one-handed stuff en route to 26 points and nine rebounds. Marietta’s Austin Witucky nearly double-doubled with 10 markers and nine boards.

Tyler Consolidated’s Griffin Phillips gave W.Va. its first lead at 3-2 at 10:08 of the first quarter after he drained a trifecta. Parkersburg South’s Seth Dennis had a putback to keep the hosts ahead 5-4, but Ohio went on a 16-3 run to forge ahead 20-8 after Miller scored from his rival Witucky’s assist.

Tanner Lett of Doddridge County knocked in one from downtown to stop the bleeding and W.Va. then used 3s from Calhoun County’s Trevor Carder (11 points) and Hurricane’s Joe Mutto before a Peacock basket cut it back to four at 23-19 at the 2:54 mark.

However, the Mountaineers just couldn’t make enough field goals to stay in the game. When Warren’s Noah Nichols hit from deep at 10:39 of the second, the Buckeyes led 38-25.

Phillips managed five straight points and a 3 by PHS’ Dylan Shaver got it back to a two-possession affair at 38-33, but Holden had an alley-oop slam from a Witucky dime and converted the three-point play. Ohio pushed ahead 72-57 late in the half on the back of consecutive Holden flushes, but Parkersburg’s Jacob McKnight drained a corner 3 to keep the Mountaineers within a dozen at intermission.

Coach Fallon’s club missed their first eight field goals of the third quarter and didn’t score until Ravenswood’s Nick Westenhaver, who had eight points and as many rebounds, scored on a putback, which made it 83-62. Shortly after that, Holden rocked a windmill dunk to bring the Buckeye cheering section to their feet.

Miller’s lay-in with 3:55 to go in the third put Ohio ahead 101-71, but W.Va. responded with seven straight points thanks to 3s by Mutto and Parkersburg South’s Brayden Mooney along with a steal and layup from Mutto.

A free throw by Fort Frye’s Luke Nelson stymied the run and W.Va. still trailed 107-84 when Dennis got a putback.

The Holden show continued in the fourth as he used an off the glass pass to himself to put down a one-handed jam. He also had a poke-away steal on the next possession, which led to Logan’s Coby Bell tossing a perfect alley-oop for yet another stuff.

Perhaps the best throw down by Holden came late in the fourth when he got out in transition and rattled the rim with a 360 dunk.

Late in the game, Parkersburg High School manager Maitham Alkhafaji was allowed to come off the bench and attempt to make a 3. After a couple misses, it was actually Holden’s pass under the W.Va. hoop that resulted in Alkhafaji draining one from deep in the corner right in front the cheering Mountaineer bench.

Parkersburg Catholic all-time leading scorer Cade Ullman made a trio of triples in the game and joined Phillips with nine markers.

WV is terrible basketball vs most Ohio schools. Only the very best can even compete in Ohio today.
