Post by BACFBasketball »

The 16th Annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Basketball Classic will be Friday, April 7 at Parkersburg South High School. The BACF All-Star game will pit senior rivals from Ohio against WV in both girls and boys games. The girls game will start at 5:30PM and the boys follow at 7:30PM.

With a 94-86 win last season, the WV girls have an 8-7 edge in the series. Last year's WV Game MVP honors were shared by Parkersburg South's Katelyn Byrd (Morehead State) and Parkersburg's Brooke Kurucz (Akron), who both scored 15 points in the game. For the Ohio squad, Vinton County's Jalen Hale took MVP honors with 13 points.

Ohio won a thriller in the boys game, 107-106, but still trail WV 12-3 in the series. Vinton County's Jordan Albright captured Ohio MVP honors with 13 points. For WV, Magnolia's Preston Boswell (Wheeling Jesuit) was the MVP with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.

In addition to the game, the girls will compete in a 3-point shootout while the boys will do the shootout and slam dunk contest.

Tickets are $5 at the door the night of the game.

Three of the head coaches will be making their first appearance in the Classic while the fourth coach will be making her second appearance. Coaches for this year’s contest include:

· Ohio Boys - Lou “Scooter” Tolzda, Meadowbrook High School. The Colts, fresh off an OVAC 4A championship are 20-3 on the season and have earned a #2 seeding in the Division II East District in Coach Tolzda’s inaugural season at Byesville. They started the tournament off with an impressive 90-54 win over West Holmes. That OVAC championship, their second in as many years, was Coach Tolzda’s 381st career victory. The Colts were ranked #14 in the final AP Press Ohio Division II Poll among others receiving votes. This is Lou Tolzda’s first time coaching in the BACF Classic.
· WV Boys – Mark Barnhart, St. Marys High School. Coach Barnhart’s St. Marys Blue Devils are 18-4 and ranked #5 in this week’s WV AP Class A Poll. Coach Barnhart is in his 14th season as the St. Marys head coach and has a career record of 183-149. This will be his first time coaching in the BACF game.
· Ohio Girls – Cory McKnight, Alexander High School. With a 21-3 record and a TVC Ohio Championship, Alexander is looking to build upon last year’s District Championship with another run in the post-season. They earned a fourth straight appearance in the District final with a 50-36 win over Minford on Saturday. After 5 years as an assistant high school girls basketball coach and one year with the Capital Univeristy Women’s Baketball team in Columbus, this is McKnight’s third season at Alexander (57-18). It will be Coach McKnight’s first appearance on the bench in the BACF game.
· WV Girls – Amy Chapman, Gilmer County. The Defending WV Class A state champions are 21-3 and were ranked #3 in the final AP Class A Poll. In her 7th year at the helm of the Gilmer County Lady Titans, Chapman has posted a 121-46 record (0.724). This is Chapman’s 2nd stint with the BACF, she previously coached the WV Girls in the 2014 game, which saw Ohio take a 74-60 win.
