What does cage scores mean? I've wondered for years.

In the "old days" (maybe pre World War 2?), fans were so enthusiastic shall we say, that a lot of the old gymnasiums installed literal cages to separate and keep the fans from the players and the playing floor. And, have read this also kept debris from flying out of the stands that was launched at officials, players, and coaches. Ahh, the good ole days...
