no mayo transferred to houston high school in memphis.

overall a pretty sloppy game, love the toughness by south point though steppin in and taking charges from day 1 is a definite plus, south point needs to rebound better thats for sure but there bigs did play big in the 2nd half which was the difference, foul trouble will be a problem it looks like for the pointers as well but the good thing is it wasnt the big guys gettin in foul trouble the guards just have to stop hackin and move their feet and keep guys out of the lane.

when valley is on they are on ... first half shot lights out ... but as we know if you live and die by the 3 it can bite you, they couldnt get any to fall til really late in the 4th quarter when the game was outta reach ... valley will be tough matchups for a lot of teams though with there quickness ... good luck to them the rest of the way

sp won the jv game as well by i believe it was 12 points

The Herald-Dispatch

SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- South Point point guard Chase Kratzenburg knew coming into Friday night that much of the offensive load would be on him this season.

After all, Kratzenburg is the only player returning from last season's 20-1 team that had substantial boys varsity basketball experience.

On Friday night, Kratzenburg showed off his abilities in impressive fashion, scoring 22 points and dishing out seven assists to lead South Point to a 73-64 win over Lucasville Valley.

"He just about had to take the team on his shoulders," South Point coach Gary Norris said. "He's almost all the experience we have right now. He picked up and did a good job for us tonight."

Kratzenburg's leadership was more important than his scoring. Coming out of the halftime break, the game was knotted 34-34 after a first half that featured guard-oriented action.

At the half, Norris told his players they needed to get the forwards more involved, and Kratzenburg implemented the plan to perfection.

South Point outscored Lucasville Valley, 16-8, in the decisive third quarter with forwards Ethan Prater and Cody Taylor notching all the points except a three-point play that Kratzenburg was responsible for midway through the quarter.

Kratzenburg said the post play was the difference for his team's offense in the second half. Prater finished with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting with 11 coming in the second half. Taylor finished with 10 points and seven rebounds as well.

"(Lucasville Valley) played some good defense, and we couldn't get set up offensively," Kratzenburg said. "When (the post players) got going, it opened it up for the whole team. It definitely helps take the pressure off the guards."

As Prater and Taylor got going on the offensive end, the defense for the Pointers also picked up. Lucasville Valley had just five points in the third quarter until Zach Utley hit a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer to end a 13-1 run that had seen the Pointers go from trailing 38-37 to ahead 50-39.

The strong defensive effort came after Lucasville Valley had no trouble picking apart South Point's zone and man-to-man defense in the first half.

"I thought the third quarter was the key," Norris said. "We gave up 34 the first half and our defense was just atrocious really."

The biggest defensive adjustment was South Point's ability to limit Indians' sharpshooter Cameron Arbaugh's open looks. Arbaugh had 11 points in the first half with three 3-pointers to help keep Lucasville Valley in the game early.

However, South Point kept Arbaugh to 1-of-8 shooting and four points in the second half. He finished with 15 points.

Utley finished with 20 -- seven in the final minute -- to lead Lucasville Valley while Blake Yates added 14 and Treg Cunningham 11 in the loss.

LUCASVILLE VALLEY 21 13 8 22 -- 64: Winters 2, Gibson 2, Cunningham 11, Arbaugh 15, Utley 20, Yates 14.

SOUTH POINT 22 12 16 23 -- 73: Kratzenburg 22, Fletcher 7, Lynd 8, Prater 15, C. Taylor 10, Winkler 9, Davis 2.
