GAHS trips South Point, 58-50
Host Gallipolis Gallia Academy started strong, then had to hold off a furious visiting South Point rally in the final period to post a 58-50 Ohio Valley Conference win in the Centenary Gym Friday night.
The triumph was Gallia’s 7th of the year against 12 setbacks. Inside the OVC, the Blue Devils improved to 5-7, South Point dropped to 7-11 overall. Gallipolis will conclude its home schedule Tuesday by hosting Fairland. It will be Senior Night for the Gallians. South Point will take on non-league Wheelersburg at home in its next outing.
Friday, Gallipolis, behind Wes Jarrell and Kole Carter, raced to a 16-3 first period lead. GAHS was on top 31-17 at halftime. After three quarters, GAHS still lead, 43-31.
In the final stanza, South Point outscored the Blue Devils19-15 climbing within one point, 51-50 with 1:12 left to play on a driving layup by sophomore Jared Whitt.
Kole Carter sank one of two free throws to put GAHS on top 52-50 with 49.1 left to play. Carter then sank a pair of freebies with 25.9 left to make it 54-50. Evan Wiseman’s two free tosses put GAHS up 56=50 with 17.3 left and Carter’s two free tosses at 10.6 iced the win for Gallipolis.
Wes Jarrell paced Blue Devil scorers with 25 points, including 13 in the first period. Carter added 13 points and had a career night on the boards with 17 of Gallia’s 28 rebounds.
Gallipolis sank 23 field goals out of 34 attempts for 67.6 percent. At the foul line, GAHS was 15 of 25 for 60 percent. GAHS had 13 personal fouls with Evans fouling out. GAHS had 16 turnovers.
The young Pointers placed three players in double figures in scoring, led by junior Elijah Adams with 12 points. Sophomore Jared Whitt popped in 11 and Freshman Tayshaun Fox had 10.
South Point sank 18 of 45 field goal attempts for 40 percent. At the line, SPHS was 8 of 14 for 57.1 percent. South Point picked off 21 rebounds, 10 in the final period and had 19 personals and 13 turnovers.
Gallipolis won Friday’s freshman game 34-22 to improve its season record to 12- 2 South Point’s yearlings dropped to 1-11.
Gallipolis led 9-0, 15-6 and 25-10 at the quartermarks.
BL Carter led GAHS with 14 points. Br. Carter added 12 and Cole Davis 7. K. Bacon led South Point with 5 points. A. Amend added 4.
In the JV game, South Point blanked the Blue Imps during the final 4:33 of play and came back from a 29-22 deficit to win 52-38. The loss left GAHS 9-10 on the year, South Point improved to 13-4.
South Point led 13-12 after one period. GAHS was up 21-30 at halftime. The score was tied 33-33 after three periods. The visitors outscored GAHS 19-5 in the final period.
Corey Call paced GAHS with 20 points. Don Armstrong and Justin McClelland each had six points. Jon Herles led South Point with 15 points. Cade Brandt added 9 points.
