Waverly 69
Hurricane 59 a final

... I've watched the Hurricane WVa team 2 times in less than a week ! they apparently are on everyone's "line them up for holiday tourney" list LOL ... the first outing last weekend at Alexander HS vs Parkersburg South (a 74-35 loss) was without their starting PG Nas'Jaih Jones - the loss to PSHS would have still happened but a lot closer ... Jones was back for the Waverly match-up last night at the Ironton Classic - he makes a difference when he is running the show/with the ball in his hands for sure - hence the 10 point W by Waverly instead of a running clock situation as was the case last week @ Alexander ... some things were the same - HHS is very physical at both ends! they can hang around when the opposition isn't hitting shots -Waverly through 2 quarters was not hitting the perimeter shot - they still took it ! 2-18 thru the first half of action ... this imo was what made the game remotely close - the Tigers of Coach Robertson have the weapons to NOT rely on the perimeter shot - if it's not going in - go to Plan B which ain't bad! Trey Robertson penetrating into the paint - he can finish as well as anyone in SEO and/or dump it off to interior players on the blocks/at the rim for a MUCH HIGHER percentage shot than those 16 missed treys in the first half ... I know , I know ... if you don't shoot'em they aren't going in, sometimes you have to set up the 3 ball with the most reliable weapon in the arsenal - Trey Robertson getting to the rim ... Hurricane "ain't" a bad team, but Hurricane doesn't have the weapons of Minford/Valley either who can make you pay with those 16 missed treys /scoring opportunities ... Waverly 69 Hurricane 59 a final ...

... PG's - their value to a team can't be emphasized enough - the return of Nas'Jaih Jones was big - at least in the first 2 quarters for Hurricane ... with the ball running through his hands - he not only was a threat to get to the rim or pullup for a jumper he got the ball into the hands of teammates WHERE on the court they could be effective on the offensive end of the floor ... in the opening quarter Hurricane had all 5 starters dent the napkin stat sheet - led by Jones with 4 points/JT James 4 pts/ 3 from the 6-11 post player Gabe Beny Till and 2 point buckets from Dillon Tingler/Brayden Whittington ... for the Tigers of Waverly Will Futhey put up 7 points including the lone 3 point basket before being taken out due to picking up his 2nd personal foul at 1:35 to play in the 1st ... Trey Robertson added 4 points on a 2 pointer & 2/3 FTs ... Hudson Kelly added the final 2 pointer for WHS ... in all WHS was 1/8 from beyond the 3 point line ... Waverly 13 Hurricane 15 after 1 ... the 2nd period was more of the same ... Waverly settled for the 3 ball - going 1/10 from downtown while Hurricane was 1/2 from the 3 point line , worked the ball through Jones at the PG position and went into half time with a 3 point lead ... for Waverly in the second Trey Robertson added a pair 2 pt buckets, Penn Morrison the lone 3 pointer ... a basket each from Kelly and Will Futhey on the blocks ... for HHS - Jones added 4 pts (8 for the half) a triple from James, Tingler on a transition bucket and 3/4 from the FT line for Till ... Hurricane 27 Waverly 24 at intermission ... anyone who knows anything about Tiger hoops knows Trey Robertson IS the guy -scores the ball, distributes the ball, dishes dimes with the ball , etc. - as the 3rd period opened with Robertson the "elder - on the floor" getting into the paint for an easy bucket at the rim, followed by a Mark Stulley transition bucket - there was now flow to the game at both ends for Waverly ... not "settling" for a 3 ball "because it was there" ... when the Tigers run their offense with "a purpose" to get shots at the rim - everything else opens up ... Trey followed with a 3 pointer where he was squared up to the basket - just like warmups an easy 3 ... the 3 straight Tiger fgs forced a Hurricane timeout at 6:48 in the 3rd Waverly up 29-27 ... when the Tiger offense is in sync the defense isn't far behind ... the Tiger D forced the ball out of Jones hands for HHS, into players hands who don't make good decisions with the ball ... the WHS D force 7 turnovers in the period ... the WHS offense found it's rhythm , Trey found HIS rhythm going off for 10 points including 2 for 2 from 3 point land ... he got penetration where he delivered dimes to Futhey/Kelly ... 17 points in the quarter for WHS while the Hurricanes took the ball out of Jones hands on offense which took shots off the table (turnovers) and points off the board - only 2 fgs in the qtr (5 points from Tingler) ... Waverly 41 Hurricane 34 after 3 ... the final period Dillon Tingler went off for 14 points (3 triples), Jones saw the ball long enough to add in 7 points to keep the score close ... on the Waverly side the Tigers owned the boards getting 2 putback baskets by Will Futhey (6 pts) ... Hudson Kelly added 7 pts, a triple from Wade Futhey (the Tigers going 3/3 from beyond arc - in the flow of the offense instead the 3 ball BEING the offense) ... from there it was a parade of Tigers to the line - Trey Robertson leading the way going 7/8 from the FT line, Stulley 3/4, and Kelly 1/2 ... Waverly 69 Hurricane 59 a final ...
