Harlem's Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers were calling themselves the Premiers,with Herman Santiago singing lead,when they auditioned with Why Do Birds Sing So Gay,based on a poem by a neighbor's girlfriend.But by the time they debuted on the charts,the group had changed its name,the song was retitled Why Do Fools Fall In Love,and the 13 year old Lymon was on his way to becoming doo-wop's first superstar.

The Crew Cuts also had a version, but it didn't do as well as that of the Penguins.
