In eighth place, we have the Logan Chieftans with 27 games played. Logan was actually in fifth place on the all-time list until Athens and Meigs passed them in 2007. Logan leads the all-time series against the Buckeyes 21-6. Logan has more victories over NY than any other team. This game is by far the biggest gate for NY out of all teams played. The teams played three SEOAL league games in '67, '68, and '69 and then it became an on-again/off-again non-league game after that. The non-league games were played in '70-'71, '75-'77, '79-'82, '86-'89, and '92-'02. The teams have not played each other since 2002 - the longest stretch of time the teams have not played each other in the history of the rivalry. The teams were supposed to play each other in 1978, but the Logan Teachers Strike cancelled that game. NY replaced Logan on the schedule that year with Alliance, and lost at Alliance by a score of 7-6.

This rivalry also originated with the Nelsonville Greyhounds, as Nelsonville and Logan played each other from the beginning of organized high school sports. There was a period of time in the SEOAL when the "rivalry games" were played over Thanksgiving Weekend, and Nelsonville vs. Logan was the rivalry game for the Thanksgiving Weekend. Sometimes the games were played on a neutral field - Haydenville (before Haydenville was part of the Logan district).

The Buckeyes performed their best against the Chieftans in the 1990's - each team won 4 games that decade (they did not play in '90 or '91). The best period within that decade for the Buckeyes was '92-'97, as NY won 4 of the 6 games played in that time span. Other than that, Logan has dominated the series.

NY's six victories over Logan include:

1981 - 40-0 (State Championship Year)
1982 - 35-13 (State Semi-finalist Year)
1992 - 33-7 (Regional Semi-finalist Year)
1994 - 20-19 (Regional Finalist Year. Logan also went undefeated in the SEOAL this year)
1996 - 28-21 (Did not make playoffs)
1997 - 27-17 (Regional Finalist Year)

Of the 21 losses, six games were really close and not decided until the end. The six losses decided by six points or less include:

1969 - 14-20
1979 - 9-10
1980 - 6-7
1989 - 0-6 OT
1995 - 18-21
1998 - 29-34 (Regional Finalist Year)

The 15 other Logan victories came rather convincingly. Despite the 6-21 overall record against Logan, this game has always been played before enormous crowds in both Nelsonville and Logan. No one else can pack Boston Field like the Logan Chieftans!

1. Vinton County - 41 games
2T. Belpre - 39 games
2T. Trimble - 39 games
4. Alexander - 37 games

NYBuckeyes96: This falls into the I don't know why I have it but I do file. A couple of years ago I was given a box of 16mm film, in that collection was the 1980 Nelsonville-York/Logan game (7-6 Logan). It's on 8mm film. If anyone in Buckeye or Chieftain country can get it transferred (I don't have a 8mm projector) then I give it to you. If your interested PM me and I'll figure out a way to get it to you. I'll be at the Trimble/Nelsonville-York game this year and later in the season at the Logan/Jackson game.

Thanks for the offer. I wouldn't know how to transfer 8mm film, so maybe it's better if someone who does know how to do it does that.

Number 9 on the all-time list is Federal Hocking. NY and Fed Hock have played each other 23 times. NY has won 22 of the 23 games. Federal Hocking won the first game in 1970, and lost the final 22 games played. All 23 games were TVC league games in the old unified TVC from 1970-1992. Federal Hocking did not score more than one touchdown in the final 21 years of this series. NY shutout FH 12 times, gave up 6 points 4 times, 7 points 2 times, 8 points 3 times, 14 points 1 time, and the one loss in '70 gave up 28 points. NY scored at least 30 points in 14 of the 22 victories. Federal Hocking is the only school from the old unified TVC that is in the Hocking Division that NY has never played in football since the Ohio Division/Hocking Division split. Likewise, Federal Hocking is the only Athens County school that NY currently does not play every year in football.

What you need to transfer it is a 8mm projector, a good camera that you can focus (not autofocus although it would still work) and a dark room. I could do it but it would take a while. I would have to go get a 8mm projector (I think I know where I could borrow one) after I transfer another 28 reels of 16mm Trimble film. (It has taken me over a month to get seven reels done)

If anyone wants to give it a shot, send me a PM

There is a two-way tie for 10th place on our list. The first team is the Miller Falcons. NY and Miller have played 19 times and NY leads the all-time series 17-2. Miller won the first meeting in 1970 18-0 and won a squeaker in 1980 22-20. Other than those two games, NY has flat out dominated the series. Of the 17 NY wins, Miller was shutout 12 times. The two teams played as a non-league game in the five year period of '70 - '74. The series resumed as a non-league game in the three season stretch of '80 - '82. So both of Miller's wins were before they were members of the TVC. '83 - '92 were TVC league games in the old unified TVC.

The two teams then played one more game non-league in '97. This is the game that is referred to as "the incident". Miller had one of its best teams ever that year. NY had the lead 13-0 at halftime, and then there was a scuffle on the field and the game was called at halftime, with NY declared the winning team, 13-0. At the time, NY had said it would never play Miller in football again because of that incident. 12 years later, NY still has yet to play Miller, so we may never see another NY - Miller game again.

1. Vinton County - 41 games
2T. Belpre - 39 games
2T. Trimble - 39 games
4. Alexander - 37 games
5. Wellston - 36 games
6T. Athens - 29 games
6T. Meigs - 29 games
8. Logan - 27 games
9. Federal Hocking - 23 games
10T. Miller - 19 games

Also tied for 10th place on the all-time list is the Warren Warriors. The two teams have played 19 times and NY leads the all-time series 11-7-1. NY played Warren every year from consolidation in 1967 - 1985, the last year Warren was in the TVC. '67, '68, and '69 were nonleague games, back when NY was in the SEOAL and '70 - '85 were TVC league games. NY has not played Warren since Warren left the TVC. This is ironic, given that at the time (1985), Warren was the only school to have played NY every season since consolidation, meaning Warren had the distinction of being the top school in terms of number of games played against the Buckeyes (one more than Vinton County because Vinton County had the teachers strike that cancelled the '73 game between NY and VC). Not playing since the '85 season has dropped the 19 games vs. Warren from the number one spot all-time in '85 down to a tie for 10th place on the all-time list today.

From what I've read in newspaper articles, NY vs. Warren was a pretty decent rivalry that attracted decent sized crowds each year. Too bad it was never renewed as a non-league game. I would have never known it was a decent rivalry at one time without doing my research.

1. Vinton County - 41 games
2T. Belpre - 39 games
2T. Trimble - 39 games
4. Alexander - 37 games
5. Wellston - 36 games
6T. Athens - 29 games
6T. Meigs - 29 games
8. Logan - 27 games
9. Federal Hocking - 23 games
10T. Miller - 19 games
10T. Warren - 19 games

Runs in my mind that GAHS scrimmaged NY on Memorial Field in Gallipolis in 1972 or 1973 when C. L. (Johnny) Ecker was the Blue Devil coach. I think the Buckeyes won in a close battle.

The 12th place - and last - team to have played NY at least 10 times in football is the Crooksville Ceramics. NY and Crooksville have played each other 13 times. This series is about as even as it can get. Crooksville leads the all-time series 7-6. The teams played each other 10 times in a 9 season span ('74 - '82). The reason they played 10 games in only 9 years is that the two teams played twice in '82 - both in the regular season and in the playoffs. The teams also played each other for three seasons this decade - '05 - '07.

This was a huge battle during the original 9 year span of games. During that time, both Crooksville and NY won state championships. Crooksville won a State Championship in 1977 and NY won a State Championship in 1981.

Highlights of the epic battles include:

1977 - Crooksville defeated NY 14-0 and went on to win the Class A State Championship.
1981 - NY defeated Crooksville 8-0 and went on to win the Division IV State Championship.
1982 - NY defeated Crooksville 14-6 in the regular season. Crooksville would still go on to finish as the second seed in Division IV, Region 15 at 9-1 in the regular season.
1982 - NY defeated Crooksville 20-13 for its second win of the season over the Ceramics in the Region 15 Championship Game, handing the '82 Ceramics team both of its two losses on the season.

Ironically, after these historic battles - 2 state championships between them and the '82 two game showdown - the rivalry was allowed to fade away. In fact, the two teams did not play each other again after the '82 two game showdown until 2005. By then, the players involved were not even alive when the previous battles took place, and may not have realized how historic those showdowns were in the mid/late 70's and early 80's.

That concludes the 12 team countdown for those teams who have played NY at least 10 times. If you guys liked this countdown let me know. I might do another countdown like this in a future trivia question. I already have a great idea for my next trivia question that I'm hoping will stir up as much interest as the previous two have!

NY did not scrimmage Gallipolis either of these years. Maybe a few years later..... I don't know, I just know for sure it wasn't in 72 or 73. (I played then). Now you know I'm an old man!! Ha.

Jottings,

My records show some different final scores in your listing of GAHS vs NHS.

I have the following differences:

1926 NHS 18 GAHS 12

1927 GAHS 1 NHS 0 I think forfeit win is always 1-0.

1931 GAHS 78 NHS 0

1936 GAHS 54 NHS 6

1938 GAHS 13 NHS 0 NHS didn't score a point in the SEOAL that season

1951 GAHS 13 NHS 7

When possible, I will double-check my findings and get back to you. PM me if you find I am incorrect in any of these. I researched these back in 1967-68 era and did document the source and date of my findings, but believe they are accurate. Let me know if they are not.

RBR
