Re: Setting new goals Weight lifting
I was happy just to be able to get back into the gym last week. I had to take four weeks off from lifting. To be honest, my body really needed the rest.
My strength is just about the same as before the rest. The difference is that my shoulders feel like those of a a high school kid again.
During my three work-outs last week, I was able to get up a few sets of 10 at 250 pounds on the bench. I did my leg presses with 800 to 900 pounds of plates on the sled for sets of 10. My gym has a relatively light stack on the tricep press downs, so I did the whole stack for four sets of 20 reps. On the Hammer Strength high pull, I did 8 plates for 10 reps followed by another set of 10 with over 9 plates.
With the type of numbers NewarkCatholicFan and TigerCanon71 are putting up, I need to get busy at the gym this summer.

Re: Setting new goals Weight lifting
I am losing strength again but this time I have talked to a few friends who have eased my mind so I'm NOT WORRIED, MUCH.
I have been doing reps with 225 the last couple of weeks.
Today was a little Bette than last week but not very good at all.
I set my goal for 30 today.
set 1 225 x30
set 2 225 x30
set 3 225 x27
set 4 225 x24
The next bench day will be Sat or Sun and I am shooting for 35.

Re: Setting new goals Weight lifting
I have stopped lifting being I am laid off and don't have money to drive to Columbus everyday.
When I get back to work I will be back at it.

Re: Setting new goals Weight lifting
I have been back it sort of. I am averaging two days a week for the last three weeks.
Gas went back down so I am trying to break my laid-off lazy stage.
I hope to be back at it full time soon.

Where would you start a 12 year old boy on weight lifting? How many pounds and what lifts should he be doing? We have a weight bench with the legs, a bar and free weights.

Re: Setting new goals Weight lifting
Start him out light. Maybe tens on the side for bench. Maybe just hs bodyweight for squats. Most important thing is to teach him the proper form. Once he ges that down then you can start adding weight. Really Id just work on the Big 3 Squat, Deadlifts, and Bench. Do those three 3x a week like on mon wed and fri.
Heres a link to a book called starting strength: http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength ... 0976805421 Itsa a really good book for beginners. It has a lot of info. Here is another link someone on bodybuilding.com did a faq on this book. Ive actually printed it out, its like 141 pgs, and it explains the entire program for you. I think reading it might help you with your son. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=998224
Like I said proper form is more important than big weight at this point. Once you get the form down the weight will start to come as long as your working hard each time your in the weight room. Good luck.

Re: Setting new goals Weight lifting
Thats pretty good. I cant do bench right now I got an inflamed AC joint. Taking a month off from bench and shoulder press will help me in the long run though. Ive been going pretty heavy for a while so I was due some rest. I did on Tuesday get for my 4th set of 5 on squats 545lbs. If I go heavier Im going to have to start wrapping my knees though. Dont want to blow something out.
