Where are all the football players going.

Post by Little buck »

Noticed a definite trend this year. More and more schools are needing to go to one Jr. High football team. This year alone the Jackson 7th grade team has had 2 teams cancel for lack of players. If the Burg had not stepped up and voluntered to play Jackson a 2nd time, Jackson would of ended up with 2 less games then was scheduled. Something that hardly ever happens!
Schools like Logan (a division 2 school) only had 19 7th grade players.
Ironton less than 20. Jackson 20 or less. Hillsboro not enough to finish the season. And these are some of the schools who actually have or had 7th grade teams. Teams like Wellston, Alexander, Oak Hill etc didn’t even have enough for a 7th grade team. So where are they going. Might be a concern for the future.

Just a few short years ago, Logan had 44 kids in 7th grade football. This was 2010-2011

GA had 30. But GA 8th grade that year had 12

P-West has 7th grade team if you're not already playing them and maybe Lucasville Valley not sure on that one and Waverly. Some of the teams you mentioned, Wellston, Alexander, Oak Hill are DV schools who really aren't considered "football" schools and typically don't have 2 teams. I believe you are also seeing a trend where less kids are playing at a young age and want to wait and come out say 8th grade year or freshman year of high school.

The smart aleck side of me says we should blame the coaches because everything is their fault. The realist side of me says football is under attack and is in the process of dying.
