Herd to play Virginia Tech should Hokies defeat Virginia

Post by Omega »

Possible make up game for Marshall to replace their game cancelled at South Carolina due to hurricane. Sweet deal for Marshall if they play or not. From WV Metro News:

BLACKSBURG, Va. — If Marshall is to play a 12th regular-season game, it’s up to Virginia Tech to make it happen.

The Hokies are 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after Saturday’s 38-14 loss to Miami at home. They take on in-state rival Virginia on Friday at home in need of a win to hopefully have an opportunity to reach their 26th straight bowl game.

Virginia already is bowl eligible.

Virginia Tech officially announced a game against Marshall for Saturday, Dec. 1 at Lane Stadium with a noon kickoff. That game will only be played if the Hokies defeat Virginia.

Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Virginia Tech will pay Marshall $300,000 if the game is played and has agreed to a home-and-home series in the future, a source said Monday. If Tech loses to U.Va. on Friday, there won’t be a Dec. 1 contest, but the Hokies will still pay Marshall $100,000 and play the future home-and-home, the source confirmed.

All seats for the potential game against Marshall will be general admission — standard seats will be $25, club seats will be $50 and suite tickets $75 — and all tickets will be delivered via email.

Virginia Tech students would receive a free ticket by the athletic department’s standard lottery system.

Mike Niziolek, who covers Virginia Tech for the Roanoke Times, reported news leaked out about the potential game before the team kicked off against Miami. Virginia Tech worked behind the scenes for weeks sorting through its options for a 12th game.

The Hokies had an opening in their schedule after East Carolina canceled the Week 3 game between the programs. Marshall had its Week 3 game at South Carolina canceled as well.

East Carolina has scheduled a Dec. 1 game against North Carolina State on Dec. 1.

Marshall (7-3 overall and 5-2 in Conference USA), travels to Miami this Saturday to take on FIU, which leads the league’s East Division.
