2016-17 Ohio State Buckeyes Athletics Year in Review:

Baseball - The Buckeyes finished their 2017 baseball season in unsuccessful fashion, finishing with their first season record under .500 since the 2011 season. Even in that season they ended at 25-26. The bright spot in Ohio State's season was that freshman Dominic Canzone was named to the All-Freshman Big Ten team and was also named 3rd Team All Big Ten. The good news for the Buckeyes is that they only had 5 seniors, and less than a handful of those were in the regular starting nine. 8 teams that the Buckeyes played this season made the NCAA Tournament, their record against those teams was 6-11. OSU's overall record for the season was 22-34 and they went 8-16 in conference play and failed to make the Big Ten Tournament.

Men's Basketball - Per the high standards that Thad Matta has set in Columbus over the last decade for Buckeye Basketball, this was not a successful season. This was the first season since 2003-2004 that the Buckeyes failed to reach the 20-win plateau. After OSU started at 6-0 the rest of their season did not go as planned as they finished the season at 17-15 overall and 7-11 in the Big Ten. Then, after making the Big Ten Tournament, they were upset by Rutgers in the 1st round. The good news for the Buckeyes is that next year they will return every starter except for Trevor Thompson, and they will get a full season out of Keita Bates-Diop.

Women's Basketball - It was another extremely successful year for the Ohio State women under head coach Kevin McGuff, led by Kelsey Mitchell, who was named a 1st Team All-American for a third straight season, in what was her junior season. The Buckeyes will regain all but one major contributor next season as well. They finished the season at 28-7 and 15-1 in the conference. Although their Big Ten Tournament went poorly, they did make the Sweet Sixteen before losing to Notre Dame after winning the Lexington Regional. Their 28 wins this year was tied for the 3rd most in program history, only trailing the 2004-2005 (30 wins) and 2005-2006 (29 wins) seasons.

Men's Cross Country - Head Coach Brice Allen's team had a season of ups and downs in 2016. Junior Evan Stifel proved to be the best runner in the pack for OSU, earning All-Big Ten and All-Region honors this season. Although the Buckeyes did not send any runners to the national championships they did win two invitationals including the Queen City Invite and the All-Ohio Championship. At the Big Ten Championships OSU finished 8th which is tied for their highest finish since 2013. The Buckeyes only had two seniors on their roster, and will look to finish higher next season.

Women's Cross Country - No single athlete stood out this past year for Brice Allen's Lady Buckeyes, but teamwork was shown all season. OSU finished with a championship at the Queen City Invite and a runner-up finish at the Commodore Classic. The Buckeyes ultimately finished 5th at the Big Ten Championships which is their highest finish since 2014 when they finished 4th. There were only two seniors on the Lady Buckeyes roster this past year.

Fencing - Coming in to the season looking to add a 4th national championship trophy to their mantel, Head Coach Vladimir Nazlymov's crew had an extremely successful season. Although they did not win the title, they finished runner-up for a second consecutive season. The Buckeyes will not be losing much either, they had 3 senior women and 3 senior men. The Buckeyes will try again next year to claim their 4th title.

Field Hockey - The women's field hockey team had some success this year, considering their roster only had 3 seniors, and those three didn't get a ton of playing time, but ultimately the Buckeyes only went 5-12, which ties their record from the 2014 season. For a young Ohio State team, several of their players have been selected for international level play this summer which is a good sign. Ohio State has not posted a winning record since the 2012 season and will look to do so next year.

Football - Another successful season in the books for Urban Meyer's Buckeyes. They finished the season 12-2 and 8-1 in the conference, that loss was to a resurgent Penn State program 24-21 at the end of October. The Buckeyes did make the College Football Playoffs for the second time in the three year history of the CFP, and they ultimately lost to eventual national champion Clemson in the semifinal 31-0. The Buckeyes did lose a load of seniors and other players to the NFL Draft, but will of course plan to have a ton of success in 2017.

Men's Golf - A very successful season is in the books for Buckeye men's golf. Although they didn't win any tournaments, they did finish runner-up at the Bearcat Invitational. What made them very successful was that they finished 3rd at the Big Ten Championships which is their highest finish since the 2003-2004 season when they won the whole thing. Then, OSU was selected to compete in the Stanford Regional where they competed for a spot at the national championship and ultimately came up short as they finished 9th at the regional. The Buckeyes will return most of their team next year as they graduate just 3 seniors.

Women's Golf - The women's golf team wrapped up a very good season, finishing 3rd at the Big Ten Championships which they topped last year as they were the defending Big Ten Champions coming into this year. After the Big Ten Championships, the Buckeyes finished 4th at the NCAA Regional that they hosted, earning a bid to the national championship. Through stroke play, they were sitting in 4th which put them in the match play playoff. As the 4th seed, they ultimately lost in the quarterfinal to the 5th seed USC, 1-3-1. The Buckeyes will lose 3 major contributors this year, but will look for another successful season next year.

Men's Gymnastics - The dominant men's gymnastics team finished another successful season this year, actually, their most successful since 2005. The Buckeyes won numerous dual meets against Illinois-Chicago, Michigan, Penn State and Illinois and they also finished 1st at the Arnold Challenge. Overshadowing all of those accomplishments was the fact that they won the Big Ten Championship. After that, they finished 2nd at the NCAA Qualifier meet, then finished as national runner-up at the national championship which is their highest finish at the NCAA's since 2005. Just three senior highlighted the Buckeyes roster, which means more success next year.

Women's Gymnastics - On what seemed like a successful season to begin the year for the Lady Buckeyes after they defeated Pittsburgh in a dual meet and finished first in a quad meet with Michigan, Washington and Kent State. After that, they went 3-3 in dual meets and finished 3rd at the Big Ten 5-Team Meet. Then at the Big Ten Championships they finished in 5th place. Then they earned a bid to the NCAA Regional, but that didn't allow them to qualify for the NCAA Championship as they finished 5th out of 6 at the regional. 4 seniors highlighted the roster so nearly half their roster will be different next year.

Men's Ice Hockey - The men's ice hockey team made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2012-2013 season when they made it all the way to the Frozen Four. They only made it to the first round this year before losing to Minnesota-Duluth 3-2 in OT, but that was major progress within the program. The Buckeyes had an overall record of 21-12-6 and a Big Ten record of 11-8-1. There were 7 seniors on the OSU roster but a large portion of their roster still returns.

Women's Ice Hockey - It was another down year for the Lady Buckeyes as they finished the season at 14-18-5 and 7-16-4 in the WCHA after losing in the first round of the conference tournament to North Dakota 2-1 in OT. 14 wins is the most that they've posted since the 2014-15 season since they posted 17 wins. The best news for the Buckeyes is that they only had 2 seniors on their team this past season, and should be able to make a pretty good run next year.

Men's Lacrosse - This was by far and away the best season in program history for the Buckeyes, although they didn't win the Big Ten Tournament, they won the regular season title. Then began the OSU run through the NCAA Tournament where they made it to the Championship game for the first time in program history, but ultimately fell to Maryland 9-6 in the third time they've played this season. Ohio State finished the season at 16-5 and 3-2 in the conference. It might be a different story next year as OSU had 6 players drafted in the MLL Draft and had 11 seniors on the roster.

Women's Lacrosse - The Lady Buckeyes had a down year this year as they finished the season at 6-11 and a miserable 0-6 in the Big Ten. That record was their worst since the 2012-2013 season when they went 8-10 and it is also the last time they missed the NCAA Tournament. OSU did have 8 seniors on the roster but the good part is they return their goalie and the majority of their scoring.

Pistol - Although not an NCAA sponsored sport, the Buckeyes along with many other colleges compete in pistol shooting. In where it was another successful season for OSU on the pistol range. They earned 1st place finishes at the Fall Classic, Olympic Training Center, The Citadel, Winter Open and Collegiate Pistol Sectionals. They also earned dual meet victories over Texas A&M and Navy. At the National Collegiate Pistol Championships in Fort Benning, GA, the Buckeyes earned a 4th place finish. The men's roster consisted of 3 seniors while the women's roster only had one senior.

Rifle - It was another successful season for the Buckeyes rifle shooting team. They earned dual meet victories over Nevada, Alaska, UTEP, Air Force, Jacksonville State, TCU, Coast Guard and Kentucky. Along with a tie against Nebraska. At the Buckeye Open, they finished with a score of 4675 to finish 2nd and finished 3rd in the Patriot Rifle Conference with a score of 4691. At the NCAA Qualifier Dual, they defeated Kent State to earn a berth to the NCAA Championship where they finished 7th with a score of 4670, which was the second consecutive year they qualified and the second straight year they finished 7th. 4 seniors made up the entire roster.

Rowing - Although the absolute dominance for the Buckeyes on the national stage didn't continue this year, their dominance in the Big Ten continued as they captured their fifth straight conference title. OSU finished 5th with 106 points at the NCAA Championship, which is their lowest finish since 2012 where they also finished 5th. The Buckeye roster consisted of 8 seniors and a graduate transfer. The Buckeye roster also consisted of 2 athletes from the SE Ohio area (Chillicothe, Liberty Union).

Men's Soccer - It was a down year for the Buckeyes on the pitch, their 5 wins were tied for their fewest in a season since the 2013 season. They went 5-13-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Big Ten. After the regular season, they did successfully reach the Big Ten Tournament, but had no success in it, as they fell to Wisconsin 3-0 in the first round. Their only wins on the season came against Northwestern, Rutgers, Valparaiso, Oakland and rival Michigan. OSU will return most of their team for 2017 as they look to get back to the winning ways they had over the last few seasons.

Women's Soccer - The Lady Buckeyes had a more successful season than the men's team as they went 11-7-3 overall and 4-4-3 in the Big Ten during the regular season. After the regular season, the ladies received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, they defeated Dayton 3-2. Then in the second round, they traveled to West Virginia where they ultimately fell 1-0 in OT to end their tournament run. The Buckeyes will return a large part of their team for next season, but there will also be a large mix of new faces.

Softball - The Lady Buckeyes reached 35 wins on the season on the diamond this season, which is their 6th straight season with at least 30 wins and their second consecutive season in the NCAA Tournament. Their overall season record was 35-18 and they also went 15-8 in the Big Ten regular season. After a successful regular season, the Buckeyes took the field in the Big Ten Tournament where they ran through all their opponents until they ran into a buzzsaw in Minnesota in the championship game where they ultimately lost 6-0. Making it that far earned the Buckeyes a bid to the NCAA Tournament, where there was a lot of disappointment. In the regional, they lost their first two games against South Carolina-Upstate and then again to Longwood to officially bring an end to their season. Only 4 seniors made up the roster, so the Buckeyes will look to build on their success next season.

Men's Swimming & Diving - The program had another successful year, finishing tied for 2nd at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA Championships, the Buckeyes had a decent performance placing 19th. OSU earned dual meet victories against Kenyon, Denison, Cleveland State, Miami (OH), Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Wright State. Only losing one dual meet on the season, to rival Michigan. They also earned a first place finish at a quad meet against Cincinnati, Kenyon and Oakland. Then at the Ohio State Invitational, they earned a 1st place finish in a field of 10 teams. The Buckeyes had just 5 seniors so they should have another successful season next year.

Women's Swimming & Diving - The Lady Buckeyes had another good year, finishing in 5th place at the Big Ten Championships, and, just like the men, finished at 19th at the NCAA Championships. They earned dual meet wins against Kenyon, Denison, Cleveland State, Miami (OH), Toledo, Michigan State, Akron, Pittsburgh and Wright State. Their only dual meet loss was against rival Michigan. They also earned a quad meet victory over Cincinnati, Kenyon and Oakland. At the Ohio State Invitational they finished 3rd out of 7 teams. 5 seniors made up the roster, the the Lady Buckeyes should be well off next season.

Synchronized Swimming - The ladies capped off another dominant season, claiming their 30th national championship in program history. Although it is not an NCAA sport, it is sponsored by USA Synchronized Swimming, and the Buckeyes have dominated that competition. The Buckeyes earned 1st place finishes at the OSU Zero Waste Invitational and the Jessica Beck Memorial Meet. They earned dual meet victories against Richmond and William & Mary, and finished second in a tri against Stanford and Michigan. Before they won the national meet, they finished 1st of 7 at the U.S. Collegiate North Regional. 11 seniors were on the Buckeyes roster, but they have such a large team that next year they have a good chance to win again.

I'm trying something new this year, since the season has drawn to an end. We don't cover all Ohio State athletics all year, so this will serve as that somewhat as a year in review. I'll also do one for the Ohio Bobcats.
