INDY 500 in August??

Post by OHHS old timer »

From WFLI...

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the Indianapolis 500 will take place August 23 instead of May 24.

Well....that about says it all.

It’s weird. Usually I’d be getting up in a few hours to watch the Monaco Grand Prix, have lunch while watching the Indy 500, then finish it off watching the Coke 600. At least they are still running the 600 tomorrow

I know what's wrong with it. It's a Ford. You know what they say Ford stands for, don't ya? It stands for 'Fix it again, Tony'.

The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Back on Track, Sunday August 23rd. 33 Drivers,200 Laps, 500 Miles, One Bottle of Cold Milk. The only thing missing from this magical Indianapolis 500 mix is you. Don't miss out on another incredible edition of " The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." I've been very lucky over the years to have been able to attend quite a few of them.

They still have a little over a month till the race, but I would just about bet the house that it will be just like Nascar with no fans in the stands. It would be about impossible to be able to control the crowd at a venue such as that.

An Andretti will sit on the pole at the Indianapolis 500 for the Andretti family in 33 years, as Marco Andretti has won the pole. He turned 4 laps at an average speed of 231.068 mph in Sundays qualifying. As Marco surveyed conditions before qualifying, noticing that the wind had picked up, he remembered advice that Mario Andretti has long shared with his racing family. He said that Mario has always said that the wind will scare you, but it will never crash you.

Takuma Sato won his second Indianapolis 500 victory on Sunday, as the Japanese driver held off Scott Dixon and ultimately won under caution at an Indianapolis Motor Speedway left empty because of the pandemic. Indy Car officials declined to throw a red flag after a violent crash by Spencer Pigot with just a handful of laps remaining. Pigot needed medical attention on the track, the crash scene was a debris field and there was no way the race could have resumed without a stoppage. Dixon, the 5-time Indy Car Champion had pretty much dominated most of the race, asked on his radio after the last crash, whether or not Indy Car was going to give the drivers a final shootout to the checkered flag NASCAR style ?

Takuma Sato, who won Sunday's 104th Indy 500, became the 20th driver to win more than one time at Indy. Sato said that Scott Dixon was really putting the pressure on him, and that he was just doing everything that he could to hold him off. Dixon said that he thought that Indy would throw a red flag, especially with 4 or 5 laps to go. Dixon also said that he wanted to congratulate Sato, as he drove his pants off today.

Scott Dixon and Takuma Sato repeated their 20 lap shootout from the Ind 500 a week ago, with Dixon reversing the finishing order Saturday by winning at the World Wide Technology Raceway outside of Saint Louis. Dixon beat Sato by 0.1404 seconds for his 4th win of the season and 50th win overall.

Team Penske scored it's second consecutive victory in the NTT Indy Car Series, sweeping the top two spots in the results Satursay at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and making headway in the points. Will Power's first victory at the 13-turn, 2.258 mile road course also was his first this season, and teammate Josef Newgarden chopped into Scott Dixon's championship lead with a runner-up finish that was his fourth podium this season.

Colton Herta led an Andretti Autosport resurrection as the struggling team swept the podium Sunday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and earned it's first victory of the season. Herta started on the pole and cleanly made it through a dicey opening turn as the 20 year-old won for the third time in his career. He led teammates Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay in a sweep for the Andretti group. It's huge, so huge, team owner Michael Andretti said. Man, 1-2-3, after the way things have been going for us this year, this is so important.

Five-time Indy Car Champion Scott Dixon, who leads the 2020 Championship with three rounds to go, says that each one becomes more significant. Dixon won the Indy Car Title in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2018, and although he won the season opener in 03 and 08, he then suffered misfortunes in subsequent races and had to fight back to win those titles. By contrast, this season he has had a stranglehold on the title race, after winning the first three races of the season. He has since added a win, two runner-up finishes and two-fifth places, leaving him 72 points clear of defending Champion Josef Newgarden in the points race.

Josef Newgarden turned up the heat in the NTT Indy Car Series points race with his third victory of the season, by breaking through previously mediocre results on the IMS road course. The two-time and defending series Champion entered Race-1 of the Harvest GP with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ranking as his worst track, with an average finish of worse than 14th on both oval and road course. But he showed little weakness Friday, starting second and leading 34 of 85 laps for his 17th career victory. Newgarden finished 14.294 seconds ahead of Alexander Rossi in Team Penske's fifth Ind Car victory on the IMS road course. Championship leader Scott Dixon had an average day, finishing ninth after starting 12th as his gap narrowed over Newgarden. After 12 of a scheduled 14 races, Dixon's lead has shrunk to 40 points (478-438) over Newgarden.

Scott Dixon looked invincible in the first half of the Indy Car season. Then everything turned on one of the greatest drivers of his generation, and suddenly a 96pt lead has dwindled steadily down to 32 points. Dixon said it's still good to be on the leading side of it, and we still have a pretty good window. The truth is Dixon is still in the drivers seat. By finishing 8th or higher, he will still earn the title.
