What Schools Over/Under Performed?

Post by BigChuck »

Let's hear some honest assessments. Which Teams performed as expected, who over performed and who under performed during this odd 2020 season?

There's the BURG....then there's everyone else!

I’m assuming you mean over performance as better than expected so with that being the bar:

Fairland over preformed.
Burg always over performs or as expected.
Ironton and Waverly expected
Northwest over performed

Gallia and Jackson under performed

Trimble overperformed in my opinion. They had new starters at 20/22 positions and only returned 4 kids that had any varsity experience. They started a freshman and 2 sophomores on the O line, and all 5 starters this was their first year starting on the line. Defensively they only returned a DE and OLB, the rest made their first starts this fall.

wobycat I'll agree with you except for Northwest i think they under performed. The injuries had alot to do with it though.

I've seen on here that some fans claim the teams that beat them "got lucky" so I would think they're in essence saying their teams underperformed and the opponents over performed. I won't name any names to protect their hind sides from being hurt though.

I would probably put Northwest on that as expected list honestly as most that know the team were expecting them to do exactly what they did this year. Agreed on Gallia and Jackson and I think given what they had back I would probably add Minford to the list of under performed, as well as Portsmouth I have to think people envisioned more than a 2 win season.

Mentor Lake Catholic. Doubted by many all year long. Been underrated all year long. Been underdogs pretty much every game they have played and are in the D4 state semifinals as a #12 seed. I kept telling everyone that was our best win so far this year. Many agree now

Hell, to us it’s not an either/or. We have over-performed and under-performed, at the same time, every year since 2006.

The list of under performing teams has to start with Minford.

What once looked like a promising season turned into a complete dumpster fire.

Unfortunately, Jackson under-performed by a lot in my opinion. They did face some key injuries (Jacob Winters only played about 3 of the 7 games at QB), but costly mistakes and turnovers against Chillicothe and Tri-Valley prevented them from winning the FAC and a playoff game.

This Jackson team had one of the best collections of skill players that the program has seen, which is somewhat unusual...not to say that Jackson doesn't have good skill players, but this group was loaded. They just weren't dominant enough up front to realize their full potential, and also didn't execute at key moments. The good news is that most of those skill players are returning next season, so we'll see if the 2021 version of the Ironmen can redeem themselves.

Fairland getting to the regional finals was a surprise

Jackson was talked up but didn’t look very good

Wellston winning the TVC was a surprise

Warren was probably the biggest surprise

Correct. And my over performance team was fairland who looks like they've got some good talent coming up as well.

I think West overperformed with so many Freshmen and Sophomores at key positions

6-4 and a 3rd place finish in one of the toughest leagues around. 3 of the losses were to Waverly and Wheelersburg

Look at Raider stumbling into the right answer and nailing it on all accounts.

I don’t really think Gallia under performed. If you looked the way they looked in 2019 why would you expected a lot more out of 2020

I wouldn't call Wellston winning the TVC a surprise. We knew when the season started that Wellston was going to be our toughest league game. Don't underestimate what coach Smith is doing in Wellston.
