University of Rio Grande NEWS

Post by countywide35 »

Attended a a huge wreslting tourney yesterday on the campus of Rio Grande. Prior to the start the AD made an announcement to a full gym that URG will be starting a wreslting program come the fall of 2020!! Their goal is to have 40boys and 20girls on the squad !!! This is just wonderful news for the school and many many young people in our area !! I spoke with the AD for some time after he made his announcement. He stated the school will be affiliated with the Mid-South Conference split between a North Division and South Division. This project was the AD doings but said he had planned to unroll it fall of 2021 but when the university started with the new campus president he pushed for it To happen the fall of 2020 so it is going to happen.

I know what does this have to with football.

AD said the university has a goal to get 600+ student athletes enrolled at the school. Right now URG is a little over 300 enrolled student athletes. With the starting of this new program and the goal of 600 student/athletes maybe a football program somewhere down the road isn’t so much wishful thinking with this new president and AD. Regardless of football the wreslting program is a 100% done deal. For football-build it and they will come!

Great stuff for SEO!!

I've always wanted to see that at rio. and Shawnee. and wrestling is amazing to learn traits that directly relate to football. I'd love to see that. Shawnee could play at the Portsmouth field maybe. and if rio hasn't got the room to put a field, I bet they could play at gahs.

I think everybody would to see URG add football, but football is a QUANTUM LEAP in expense when compared to wrestling or any other Olympic sport.

There’s all sorts of room down there in gallia county to build a football complex. Not sure Yiu would want to play college ball in GA swamp.

We tried to get wrestling started there 30+ years ago but was shut down by the ath. dept. Had a short-lived club team. Word is thy will be starting a swimming team next year as well. Good luck in both, hoping for the best.

Heck they don't even okay Juco teams. They fill their schedule up with club teams.... It's a big waste of time and money.

The AD at Rio made the statement when they started this originally they were going to stay away from any and all teams that were considered “club teams”. Which is why they headed the Mid-South Conference. Actually , just this past Saturday this conference produced a national championship. Campesville University in KY woman’s wreslting team won the national championship. There is a girl from Jackson that is on that team!

Kendra Thompson is the girl from Jackson that was on the recent National Championship team.

The chances of Rio Grande ever forming a football program is somewhere between 0% and 1%, with the actual odds being right around 0%.

I maybe wrong on this Bait. But I thought the Bob Evans Farms has given permission to the university to access hundreds of acres there surrounding the campus.
