R22 — 3 Howard East Knox (12-0) v 8 Carey (7-5)
R23 — 3 Archbold (11-1) v 5 Anna (11-1)
R24 — 4 Covington (10-2) v 6 Mechanicsburg (10-2)
Springfield has never won a Regional Title. They didn’t qualify last year. Mogadore lost in Week 13 last year to Kirtland 21–14. They have won 17 Regional Titles and 3 State Titles.

Howard East Knox hadn’t made the playoffs since 2005 and has never won a Regional title. They have won both of their playoff games this year by a score of 21-20. Carey started out 1-4 and finished 8th in R22 at 5-5. They won a shootout with 1 seed Western Reserve 50-41 and then a 7-0 slugfest with Hillsdale in Week 12.

Archbold beat Coldwater 27-21 in Week 11 and then revenged a week 6 loss to Liberty Center in Week 12. Anna has always been the football only black sheep of the MAC. They were 2–11 all time in the playoffs until winning twice this year. Anna beat Coldwater 49-8 in Week 8 and fellow MAC member Minster in Week 11 (47-21).

Both Covington and Mechanicsburg benefited from the MAC Schools shifting from R24 to R23 this year. Covington took out Southeastern In Week 12 to get to the Regional Final. Mechanicsburg only two losses came to the 2 D5 R20 finalists West Jefferson and West Liberty Salem.

R26 — 1 Leipsic (11-1) v 3 Hamler Patrick Henry (9-3)
R27 — 1 Harvest Prep (11-1) v 2 Newark Catholic (9-3)
R28 — 2 Marion Local (10-2) v 8 New Bremen (9-3)
Cuyahoga Heights has won 4 Regional Titles with most of them coming in very recent years. They won R25 last year and lost to Trimble in the State Semis. Lucas has never won a Regional Title and escaped McDonald in Week 11 in OT 21-20.

Both Leipsic and Patrick Henry lost to McComb last year in the playoffs as McComb went on to win a State Title. Patrick Henry lost all 3 of its games to playoff teams from bigger divisions including a 39-36 loss to Archbold.

Harvest Prep lost week 1 to D3 Eastmoor 13-12 and hasn’t lost since. Newark Catholic is trying to return to their glory days of 8 State Titles and 25 Regional Titles. 25!!

Marion Local who has won 10 State Titles and 17 Regional Titles has an all-time playoff record of 78-11. New Bremen has never won a Regional Title and has been towards the bottom of the MAC pecking order most years. Marion Local lost to Kirtland in the D6 State Final last year. The last year that Marion Local failed to win the Regional Title was in 2010.... which means they’ve won 8 straight Regional Finals and most of those were in D6. They needed a last minute TD to force OT last week vs Fort Loramie before pulling out a 24-21 win.

Did anyone notice that neither Cleveland St Ignatius nor Cincinnati Moeller made the playoffs this year?

Since 1988 one of these two schools has always been in the playoffs (and usually both) with one exception.

2015. St Ignatius went 5-4 and Moeller went 5-5.

That was the year D1 only had 2 regions and the top 16 from each region made the playoffs. St Ignatius and Moeller both finished 21st that year in their region.

Moeller went 2-8 this year and didn’t defeat an Ohio team.

Ignatius went 5-5 this year and defeated 2 Ohio teams. They beat Moeller 38-7 and Akron Hoban 42-41. The win over Hoban broke Hoban’s 31 Game winning streak that dated back to week 1 of 2017 when St Ignatius beat them 17-3.

Great info, Lucas Davenport........I think that Moeller has evolved into a basketball school........back to back D1 state titles (5 total), 3 straight appearances in the D1 championship game. I remember watching Moeller vs. Massillon at Ohio Stadium in 1985 (Moeller won)......by far the biggest crowd I have ever seen at a championship game. Massillon brought a huge crowd, so big that there was a lot of orange and black in the upper deck. Moeller was a real powerhouse in the Gerry Faust days, then St.Ignatius became the next dynasty under Chuck Kyle.

LucasDavenport: I would like to see Massillon win the state title. Perhaps no other town in Ohio has as much passion for football as does Massillon. I have been to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium to watch the state championships, and that stadium is probably the mecca for Ohio high school football.

Can you imagine a high school football crowd so big that they were in the upper deck at the Horseshoe? I will never forget the size of that Massillon crowd in 1985.

Ironton lost to ASVSM 20-14 the game before the Moeller - Massillon game, I watched both games. Chris Spillman played for Massillon, the Francisco brothers for Moeller. Frank Stams for ASVSM. The Shoe was orange & black for sure.

Massillon’s best player just got arrested for felonious assault in Akron. Guaranteed he plays

Massillon is of course accusing Akron Hoban of making the Akron police make up charges

Nothing unusual for "Metro" area teams.

Thanks. Paulcrew, and you are correct on the year (1982). I should have looked it up instead of going by memory.

Avon defeated Avon Lake 13-12 in Week 1. Last year Avon Lake lost in Week 12 to Toledo CC who moved to R7 this year. Avon defeated Toledo CC in Week 13 last year.

Toledo CC had to get repeat victories in Week 11 and 12 over Toledo St Johns and Toledo St Francis Desales. They are probably happy to see Olentangy who limped in to Week 11 at 5-5. I can't recall the exact year but I was working in the Toledo area, and heard that Moeller was coming to town to play Toledo Whitmer. When I saw an earlier poster had mentioned his name, I think his name was Dewan Francisco was the star tailback for Moeller. I'm pretty sure that Dewan did go to Notre Dame. I think there QB went to Boston College also. I know he did have a brother on the team, but I don't remember much about him. I do still have the game program, but of course I couldn't find it now. What I really wanted to post was that Moeller just happened to have a running back on the team by the name of Barry Larkin, who I think may have been in the 10th grade. I remember Moeller winning the game mayby 30 something to 7. I could be wrong but I think Moeller may have been rated No.1 in the USA. I'll never forget the newspaper in Toledo raving about the fact that Gerry Faust had about 9 or 10 assistant coaches. With all the talk about the Stadium sizes for the high schools in the playoffs, I think that even back then that Toledo Whitmer had the largest and probably the nicest Stadium that I had ever been in.

Believe it or not, the star tailback's first name just dawned on me. How I could have ever forgotten this I'll never know. I may not spell it right but here goes, Highawatha Francisco. Mayby his brothers first name was Dewan ? Frankie, I pretty sure you are the one that posted his name, if you read this you may be able to shed some light on this ?

vette you are correct. Hiawatha and Dewan Francisco played on that Moeller team. Larken went to Michigan to play football & baseball.
Schembechler redshirted him and he then concentrated on baseball in college. During the Faust years Moeller played the best teams in the country. They built a big stadium at Kings Island to play their home games.

Thank you very much, I should have asked you before trying to spell that first name. Lol I do have the game program, I just couldn't find it last night. Toledo Whitmer had a very good team that year, but Moeller just dominated them. That's the only time that I ever seen Moeller play, they were really something back in those days. I can't remember just when that Faust went to Notre Dame, or even how long he was there ?
