Athens has 784 this year, which is fairly high for them. We're half the size of Parkersburg South.

Are you referencing Canal ? If so, they are in what I call the "starter division" (Occ Capital) which is the weakest of the 5 divisions . The OCC will restructure again next year (2020) so it will be more balanced and they will be called A,B,C,D and E to make it easier than having to name them every time they add teams.

No spin there, check out the schools in each division and the proofs in the pudding . No comparison , Groveport, Franklin Hts, Newark have a decent season once every 10 years. Canal was in the MSL for many decades until they grew so much SO quickly that their AD thought it would be a good idea to go compete with the big boys and that hasn't worked out to well so far. New Albany and Big Walnut are newer members that grew rapidly also and have made the playoffs a few times in the past but aren't close to being powers. Big Walnut did win the 2007 DIII title with the one great team they had but there is no comparison with the other divisions in the OCC.

Central Ohio's population boom in the last 30 years has created havoc on the school's in the area along with creating about 15 or 16 completely new schools in that timeframe. Canal has growing pains and are still trying to catch up athletically because in the last 30 years they went from a D5 village school to a large DII now and they'll eventually be DI in a couple more years. They still can't play with or win games against the OCC's traditional powers, That's why the were put in the Capital division. It's gonna take a long time for them to get to that level which they may never do in my lifetime. They still don't have one building as tall as many in Chilly or Athens, they're not a county seat, they have have about 6 businesses in the old part of town, still plenty of farmers on the outskirts and they still have a country village mentality and have many SEO transplants living there. They joined the OCC in the 2013-14 school year so they probably scheduled Athens before they entered the conference then had to cancel it after they joined is my guess but don't know for sure.

Athens played Canal in 2016 and 2017. They cancelled for 2018 and 2019 to play and beat the new Olentangy for their non league game. So happy they went 9-1 and missed the playoffs

Anyway, the Cardinal is the weakest and I can't help it that Canal knocked Athens out of the playoffs in 2016 & 2017 Anyway, I live up here and can't keep track of all the schools added in what seems like every other year. New OCC alignment starts next year until 2024 and then they will realign because another 4 schools somewhere will be built and teams need added !!!! This city is crazy (I believe last total i got was that c-bus and suburban areas are gaining on average 50k new people a year now) .

I don't know anything about Parkersburg South, but can you say with certainty that just because they are a smaller school, size really matters that much. Athens is twice as big a school as Waverly if those numbers are correct.

We have a little over 700. Ohsaa has Athens 313 and Waverly 250. We are in the same division in most sports

That was a guess on total enrollment. Boys and girls grades 9-12. Parkersburg South has 1500 total kids. Athens has almost 800. These aren’t football numbers which are only boys grades 9-11.

Spare me, Canal Winchester went 6-34 before being moved to the OCC's weakest division by far. Last year, Canal Winchester's nine wins came against teams which went a combined 29-61.

Trying to get easy playoff points. Same reason they schedule Teays Valley, although it almost came back to bite them last year.
