SEO HIGH SCHOOLS (ALL TIME TEAM STATE TITLES & R/UP'S, ALL SPORTS)

Post by FANOSPORTS »

Top 4:
Ironton - 6 titles, 8 runners up
Wheelersburg - 6 titles, 5 runners up
Portsmouth - 4 titles, 5 runners up
Portsmouth Clay - 3 titles, 2 runners up

* These are my calculations, correct me if I'm incorrect *
Note: I didn't count anyone above or bordering I-70 or West of rt.23 (ie Zanesville, Newark, Pickerington, Cambridge, Bellaire, etc.)

Can only assume you are talking "team" titles? If so, put Adena above Clay. The Warriors have 4, winning the first state volleyball AND girls basketball titles in their inaugural seasons, circa 1975-'76 led by future Olympian Cindy Noble. They returned and won another girls basketball title in 1994. However, the school's first state title was in 1972 or '73 in boys track and field...

Yes, team titles  (It would take a while to figure individual titles by name for each school)

Portsmouth's 4 state titles in basketball is the most team state championships in any sport by any school in the SE District. Interesting that Ironton(football) and Portsmouth (basketball) have both appeared in 8 state championship games, with the Fighting Tigers going 2-6 in those games, while the Trojans have posted a 4-4 record. Portsmouth is the 10th winningest program all time in Ohio in boys basketball, while Ironton is 13th in football. Wheelersburg has the 4th highest winning pct. in football all time in Ohio.

Wheelersburg's 3 state titles in baseball is tied for the 2nd most team state titles in the SE district with the Clay girls softball team, which won titles in 1980, 1982, and 1983 with standouts Teresa Ruby and Beth McCullough. Clay is also the 3rd winningest softball program all time in Ohio.

Ironton and Wheelersburg are the only SE district schools to have multiple state titles in football. Portsmouth finished state runnerup in baseball in 1981, losing to Cleveland Holy Name 4-3.

FANOSPORTS numbers on Portsmouth are correct taking into account only team sports. The Trojans also had Dick Klitch win the state tennis title in 1951, while Lynsey Shipley won a state title in track 3 years ago.

Portsmouth Notre Dame has 2 state titles in football (67 and 70). Coached by ed miller. So there have been 4 state titles in scioto county in football and ed miller had a hand in all 4. Coached the first 2 at Notre Dame, the 3rd at burg with his twin sons playing and the 2017 burg team had at least 3 of his grand kids on it I think.,correct me if I'm wrong. Not 100% surr

Nelsonville-York 81 in football
Nelsonville Greyhounds 67 in Baseball. We include that in our history as Buckeyes as well. 67 was the year Nelsonville High school closed. Talk about going out with a bang!

Burg has six track state champions. But they have the granddaddy of them all. A World Series softball championship

I’ve always wanted to make a sign for the 67 Nelsonville state title and put it in the gym.

This would be the York people:

packers80: Thanks for the info on Notre Dame.....I missed including them about multiple state titles, probably because I was thinking playoff state championships. Notre Dame's were poll championships since the playoffs didn't start until 1972.

Doesn't Portsmouth East and Paint Valley both have baseball state titles?
