25-40 seconds

Post by CheeseBurger »

Hello ladies and gentlemen and those of you who are referees. We have a new rule this season. What decideds the 25 vs 40 seconds of play this season? Also how is this going to affect play? Do you like it?

Haven’t seen the rule but I would say like college: 40 seconds begins from the end of the play on officials signal. 25 seconds would be after a penalty, possibly kickoff, exchange of possession, timeout, etc.

Just will start as soon as play ends. Won’t be a big difference

So if I have this right during the bulk of a drive/series there is 40 second to work after ball is set. So a grinding drive gets 60% more time to grind. Someone explain to me how this isn’t the biggest change since helmets.

Shouldn’t be too much of difference. The ref now doesn’t have to worry starting it. Here’s a better explanation

They don’t wait for ball to be set. 40 starts at the end of the play.

How long do you think it currently takes from the end of a play to when the official begins the .25 play clock? I’d say many times way more than .15 seconds. With the new rule the .40 seconds begins at the end of the play. It will actually be faster in many cases.

Clock operator starts the .40 at the completion of the down. Don’t have to wait for ball to spotted, etc etc and referee doesn’t have to signal ready for play, regardless what’s going on.

By team being more aware of the extra time grinding teams will be keeping this in the back of their mind. Burg Jackson Portsmouth Ironton I still think this will change the game been watching film ball gets set in 5-10 seconds average of 7 seconds or so. I am a fan of the rule and I would love to see some throwback ball and show these boys how real men played the game.

Clock management is a thing of the past. Spread tempo hurry up offense is all you see. I’m old enough to remember the days when spread was just some thing they did out in sanfansissyco! Sloberknocking defense won games. The more physical team won. We prided our selves on running the ball taking control and winning the game. Dime back and nickel backs was what ya got back when ya put 50 cents in the pop machine for a 35 cent bottle of pop!

This will not affect anything imo. The power run game still exists but it’s disguised a little different.

If I was a coach I would be working on this in practice this year. You may think there is no difference but waiting until game time is not a smart thing to do.

No, after the play ends, will begin before the ball is actually set down

So then this new rule will be left to a volunteer in the home press box to reset the play clock? I don't see any issues coming this season with clock issues.....

Yes. Just as it is now at places with posted play clocks.

I think with some set ups, the back judge has a hand held reset.

The same volunteer who did the 25 second clock. I'm sure their will be a bit of a learning curve for everyone, but it's not that difficult.
