Final: Waverly 30 Athens 27

Post by toast »

This should be one of the top week one match-ups in Southern Ohio this year. Big game for both teams right off the bat. Scheduled for Friday, August 30 at Waverly. Good to see these schools playing each other again. There have been many good competitive games between these two in the past.

Waverly and Athens are coming off stellar regular seasons that saw them both go 9-1 and qualify for the playoffs. Waverly has a renovated facility with one of the best turf fields around. The food you can purchase once inside is second to none. Several other significant upgrades are coming soon.

Waverly will be replacing nearly their entire offensive and defensive lines. They do return their QB and most of their skill positions.

Perhaps someone will shed some light on the outlook for Athens this season.

Athens is a strong program . We lost some seniors but should be able to handle the waverlys and Jacksons without much trouble.

Waverly should be the slight favorite because of their QB but Athens is a mystery. Athens lost a lot but they have a very good junior class for next year

Waverly is an awesome place to watch a game. Food was great, atmosphere was great. Can’t get much better.

The loss of E. Wolfe and Marquez to graduation makes P. Wolfe’s return that more important. Really need him, even if at 80%. He was a popular target of many of the passes. If Shanks can equal or better those stellar numbers and Shoe has another 1,000 yd rushing season the Tigers should be in good shape. But, as was said, it comes down to the lines for Waverly - always has..
I look for a very good year for the Tigers.
Also looking forward to additional facility upgrades, on the hill as well as downtown...

Very intriguing matchup glad they are playing one another, unfortunate that Piketon Waverly game isn’t being played but hope this can be a series that’s played week 1 for a few season

I know this is a bit too early to put big game implications in this but what other big games out of conference games does Athens have?

Waverly too big for piketon.
It was a mutual agreement from both sides, felt it was best for both programs at this point and time..... Nobody said Waverly was too big for them...

We need to beef it up more . Jackson and Logan are not much anymore. We’ll see about waverly. Not sold on them either

Waverly D4, what’s the outlook on Logan this season as well? Jackson should be good as well I’m assuming and don’t know much about Parkersburg South. Just was curious to when it comes close to playoff time who’s beaten who and has a lot of points

Jackson not much anymore? Since when? lol

Waverly has been to the playoffs the last two years.

Logan has been down - but that will not continue, especially with Eddy on the sideline. But even at (1-9), they are a misleading team. Their schedule is brutal! That's why Athens only won 21-14 last year. Won 21-3 the year before and lost 31-30 in 2016. Athens also lost 61-49 when the series resumed in 2015. The Bulldogs are (2-2) vs Logan heading into year No. 5.

Parkersburg South is a D2 according to Ohio - but with D1 enrollment numbers. They are a huge school in West Virginia.

I hate that. it's like Portsmouth dropping the burg. it's a game that needs to be played.

Waverly too big for piketon.
I don't buy that for a minute. especially being from ironton and seeing their schedule the last 59 years.
