Next Meigs Football Coach

Post by Fonzie »

Any ideas who will be the next to lead the Marauders on the gridiron?

The only thing I have heard is they will be taking applications to fill the position. For the sake of building a program, I hope they get someone that will put in the time, and hopefully stay for a while.

Good thoughts but I think those days are past us. These coaches are tired of dealing with stuff outside of the program that steal the love of the game many of them they felt years ago. But who knows maybe they will find what you describe. HS spirts needs to get back to being focused on building young men as the top priority.

I am in total agreement with you. It is about building character, sportsmanship and discipline in these young people. It is an extension of the educational program and the game teaches so many things about life in ways the academic portion does not teach. Unfortunately, too many parents create issues by venting their frustrations because they do not think coaches are doing enough to provide their kids with ample opportunities to make that child a college/professional athlete. Coaches need to be able to coach without worrying about someone's kid getting enough playing time. It is not a parents' call because they do see what the coaches see during the practices. Coaches have more time to evaluate these young people in practices. I believe school administrations should be the buffer between the coaches and parents and state that playing time is up to the coaches discretion to take that pressure off of any coach.

Good luck to Meigs in finding their next coach!

I wish nothing but success for the next coach of the Marauders.

I do have to smile as people talk about the support an administration owes the new staff.

In a perfect world they would be in lockstep but it doesn't always turn out that way.

Board members get pressure from parents and they in turn pressure the principal and super.

Picture yourself as the Super at Meigs (I don't even know who that is currently) and your board calls for a coaches head.

It comes down to money.

The Super at Meigs makes well over 6 figures---especially when you include their benefits.

I would think one could live pretty well in Pomeroy or Rutland on that salary.

Now pretend it's you making the decision; do you risk throwing away a 100K plus salary to protect a coach?

There are Supers who will take that risk and we can see schools where coaches are given several years to prove themselves and then there are schools that churn coaches.

Its the money that decides in most instances.

And...that is why Howard's post is relevant. As long as the parent's act the way they do and money is the priority over integrity, a lot of the good coaches will stay off of the sideline.

The issue with finding officials is very similar to the reduced number of coaches, or should I say "good coaches". Why would a great individual put their neck out there, knowing good and well that there will be a fraction of parents that will never be happy with you. In today's day in age, that means they turn to social media to run your name through the mud. Parents are the problem with today's athletics. We like to blame the kids, and how "soft" kids have become. Nope, WE as adults, (PARENTS), have allowed our kids to be soft, by creating excuses for them. Never holding them to higher standards, and for bailing them out of trouble each and every time.

I think anyone who willingly jumps into coaching or education for that matter, is a little crazy. I am not saying that as a bad thing. Coaches and teachers alike, do something day in and day out that most of us regular people couldn't do if we tried. Many times with never so much as a thank you.

Whoever takes the Meigs job, you will have your work cut out. Wish you nothing but the best, and hopefully, parents and community can give you a chance to prove yourself before they are calling for your job.

Coaches at Meigs have not had support of their BOE for a number of years in regard to athletics. Doesn't matter who Superintendent is, when BOE members (many of which never participated in athletics and don't have time or money invested in a degree) are making decisions based upon their own personal interests or family interest, it is not a good thing. I do believe current Superintendent, is trying to right the ship, but seriously look at what he has had to deal with so far. Former BOE member in the media, (not good), former Coach (who had good intentions I think) but brought in his guys only to in turn help show his guys the door, maybe an ego problem there, so the hits just keep coming. BOE helped run off the previous football coach, because ( speculation) multiple BOE members from Rutland area and wanted Coach Bartrum. Fozie and Howard are telling it like it is, let the Coaches coach, Superintendent run the district, and BOE members need to be seen and not heard at times. Superintendent does make 6 figures, anyone else want the responsibility that he has on a day to day basis, better think about it, before saying yes. A lot stress, worry from daily grind, let alone a dysfunctional BOE who tries has 2 board meetings a month so they can receive benefits. Someone please check my last statement, I may be wrong but don't think so, so who will be the next coach at Meigs?

AMEN Fonzie . . . been out of coaching for a while. Got out at the right time . . . kids HAVEN'T changed . . . parents are rapidly ruining sports in our country. Many of the posts on here reflect that. Good luck to whomever takes this job, the Wellston job, and the Vinton County job. They are in for a treat.

Meigs needs to run the football and play good defense as the cornerstone of their attack. Having a strong running game will make that young qb they have even better

I believe at least one teacher in the building has applied. He has plenty of experience, not at Meigs, and would be a great hire.
