The Rivalry-Rich Football of Southeastern Ohio

Post by Valenth »

Just think of all the great rivalries of this area has to offer...

Burg/Ironton
West Portsmouth/Portsmouth
Valley/Minford
Ashland/Ironton

This discussion is to dwell on some of the great memories in these rivalries from all around our area! Name your rivalry and moments you remember! (Sort of a flashback history thread) 😀

In my opinion you missed the biggest and most important.

Portsmouth vs ironton
First meeting way back in 1902
124 games
Ironton leads 59-57-8
That many games and that close is crazy how competitive it has been.
2 playoff games
1997 both had trouble scheduling games so they decided to play 2 regular season games.
These two are historicaly the 2 big local schools and were each other’s only local competition.

It was also PHS that broke Irontons undefeated streak.

Nelsonville-York vs. Athens

And one that isn’t played as often as it used to....

Nelsonville-York vs. Logan

Rock Hill/Coal Grove. Especially in the 80’s.
Rock Hill and Chesapeake has had a heated rivalry as of late, including one game that was called in the middle of the fourth quarter due to a bench clearing brawl (I wanna say 2013).

Athens vs Nelsonville-York is a bigger deal to Athens than it is to Nelsonville-York.
For most of us, it's just who we have to play for a TVC title most years.

Some of my favorite memories are playing against the Tigers at Tank in games when both teams were ranked with a packed house, crowds going crazy, PHS driving towards the west end zone with Irontons band rocking so loud we can’t hear the snap count so we just went on first movement.

Bob Lutz great coaching decision to snap the ball out the back of the end zone and take a safety rather then give PHS a chance at a block or return and short field to preserve a win for the Tigers. This one didn’t end the way I wanted but that’s ok that what this game is about, big time plays and big time coaching dessicions, in one of the biggest games in Ohio.

I’ve talked to people from other schools and they have told be about their rivalries and although they are nice nothing seems to compare.

I’ve had to tell them if you have never been apart of it and it’s 116 year history you just can’t understand.
People have to realize we had already played 50 games against each other before a lot of theses other rivalries started.

Athens vs Alexander. It’s for all sports.

But you could say TVC/SEO vs Athens. Everyone loves beating those college professor kids

I think Athens VS NY is becoming just as big as NY VS Trimble if not bigger.. a lot more on the line. More importantly both great games both great rilvaries, and on a side note I do miss NY vs Logan

I'm sure Logan will be back on the schedule for a couple years in the next few years.

I think at one time it was a great rivalry but it hasn't really been competitive in years.

It's kinda how Logan and Athens went for a long stretch.

True. Long time Series about to end. The Jackson Gallia series would be more of a hatred rival something like Athens vs N-Y. But Jackson and gallia don’t play after this past fall. Would have to say the Ironmens new found rivals would be Chillicothe and now Hillsboro

That’s how I feel about Trimble. Athens means more. Titles mean more.

We used to have a great series with Athens but I think we won too many games and they dropped us.

I know. Most people don’t know Athens used to be in Athens West Virginia. Athens wouldn’t build new luxury boxes so they moved the team to The Plains
