I have a feeling this game may be better than what it has been in the past.

Just a hunch.

Article about Warren for this season

VINCENT — As far as opening-day football practices are concerned, Monday ranked high on Tim Carver’s all-time list.

“It’s the best first day I’ve had in years,” said the second-year Warren head coach before the start of Tuesday’s afternoon session at the Warriors practice field. “I’ve been a head football coach for 23 years, and it’s either No. 1 or No. 2.”

Carver and his staff greeted 55 enthusiastic Warriors on the first day.

“About half of them are veterans,” Carver said. “We’ve got a big freshman class. We’re going to try to bring them along slowly. Let them play freshman games and JV. We’ve got some of them who want to go out there and play now as a freshman so they can be a four-year letterman. So, how can you argue with that.”

Last season, Warren posted a 2-8 overall record. Considering the Warriors were winless the year before, and only won one game in 2014, it was a modest improvement.

With the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League (SEOAL) folding, Warren, now a member of the OVAC (Ohio Valley Athletic Conference), will have several new gridiron opponents, like Crooksville, John Marshall, Linsley Academy, and Fort Frye, on its schedule this fall.

“The kids are really looking forward to the Fort Frye game,” Carver said.

Warren could have a one-two punch in the backfield with the return of senior quarterback Ronnie Hill and senior running back Cole Riffle.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Hill is a southpaw, who likes to run.

“I like to hit,” said Hill, smiling. Hill will also get an opportunity to do that in the defensive secondary as a free safety.

Hill’s backups will probably be righties’ Evan Gandee and Thomas Miller.

Riffle, at 6-0, 200 pounds, figures to be the Warriors’ go-to guy on offense, though. Last year, he rushed for 1,182 yards and nine touchdowns.

“I’d like to rush for 1,000 yards again this year,” Riffle said.

A D3 special mention All-Ohio linebacker last season, Riffle probably won’t be coming off the field very much this fall.

Warren graduated a good wide receiver in Bishop Ford (now playing at Marietta College), but senior Liam Kellar, Ben Goedel, and junior Tyler Schafer each has good hands.

“We’re looking solid at the skill positions,” Carver said.

Now, if the offensive line can gel…well, look out for the Warriors.

“That’s a work in progress,” said Carver of the trenches.

Early Tuesday afternoon, the Warriors worked on their kicking game. Landon Wigal and Ethan Yost are expected to handle those chores.

“At all levels of play, 75 percent of all games are won by some aspect of the kicking game,” Carver said. “We spend an hour every practice going over some aspect of the kicking game.”

I think it will be a closer game than the last few years. Athens strength is speed but our O-Line lost a lot to graduation and our best big guy went to Toledo Central Catholic. Davis is unproven at QB. Casteel will probably have a break out season at RB

What's the final going to be? You appear to have given only the first quarter score.

Athens defense and skill should be pretty good. It really comes down to the O-Line and QB play where they go. Athens will still be big on the line just inexperienced.

Athens wins big, but I would not be surprised if Warren wins their fair share this year.

Warren will be a MUCH better football team this year I suspect.

I was impressed with their fight last year. Return a lot of their kids.

Athens should be strong again, but a challenging first half of their schedule will tell a lot.

Athens should win here by multiple scores, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Warriors avoid the running clock.
