Athens in the TVC: The Numbers

Post by Dundas »

Since the Athens/Wellston thread has been pretty much all about Athens schedule, I thought I’d do some research on the TVC since Athens has joined.

*I did omit Belpre as they moved to the hocking after the 2009 season.

Conference Championships

N-York 5
Athens 5
Alexander 1
VC, Meigs, Wellston, RV 0

TVC records since 2008 thru week 7 of 2018

Athens 49-10
N-York 46-13
Meigs 32-28
Alexander 24-36
Wellston 23-36
Vinton Co 13-46
River Valley 9-19

Overall records since 2008

Athens 84-23
N-York 73-34
Meigs 53-54
Alexander 52-55
Wellston 43-64
Vinton Co 26-81
River Valley 21-26 (since joining the TVC)

Number of games against teams with winning records since 2008

Wellston 50
N-York 46
Vinton Co 45
Meigs 44
Alexander 41
Athens 33
River Valley 16 (since joining the TVC)

Overall record vs teams with winning records since 2008

Athens 17-16
N-York 17-29
Alexander 12-29
Meigs 4-40
Wellston 4-46
River Valley 2-14 (since joining the TVC)
Vinton Co 1-44

Diving deeper into some Athens numbers

Athens is 58-16 against smaller schools since 2008.
Athens is 36-3 against smaller schools with losing records.
Athens has 3 wins over schools the same size or bigger with winning records.

Again, all of these numbers are from 2008 through week 7 2018.

Just for fun, if Athens had not joined the TVC, the championship totals would be,

N-York 8
Alexander 2
Meigs 1
VC, Wellston, RV 0

Also, since 2008, every TVC Ohio team has finished last at least once except for Athens. Their lowest finish in the TVC was 3rd in 2008. They have been first or second every year after.

I assume you left off all of Athens playoff games on purpose? Athens beat 4 teams the same size of them with a winning record just in 2014.

We all know that was a magical year with a D1 QB very rarely seen in SEO and they would have won a conference title in many conferences that year. It's a once in a lifetime season. Now, Let's get back to the original post being realistic !!!!!

Interesting regular season numbers. Just shows that Athens needs to beef up their non conference schedule. However, then they might not win 8-9 games a year if they play teams their size with a decent record.

Everybody jumps on Athens until they show up on Fridays with twice as many fans as most other TVC schools. I'm pretty sure AD's don't mind when the Bulldog faithful arrive & fill a gym on Tuesday nights. I'm also pretty sure the athletes, coaches, etc ... like having Athens host a lot of the TVC events, especially track. Great facilities, centrally located. The stats above proves they didn't come into the league & dominate. NY has just as many football titles & VC has more basketball titles and Alexander girls have more everything.

These are regular season numbers. The talk was Athens schedule so that’s what I looked into. Ny and Athens definitely have the best playoff success in the TVC.

The slot back, Saltzmen, is playing at Georgetown
The center played 4 years at Capital
And it's 4 D1 players. Trae at Northwestern. Joe at LSU. The twins both play at OU.
The 4th WR, Wiseman (who owns state record with 7 TD's in one game) could have played small college like Capital, but elected to go to the military

Yes that’s final regular season records of opponents. These are also regular season numbers for Athens as well as the rest of the TVC.

If the original argument was Athens is too big. Then I’d like to see the numbers for Trimble on Hocking side. We all know they aren’t way bigger in school size than ther league. Just better. So maybe Athens is just better with better coaching.

I’m not making an argument, only throwing out numbers. Trimble, I’m sure, over the last 10-15 years has dominated the Hocking as much or more than Athens in the Ohio. They are one of the smallest Hocking schools. If you take away Athens, NY has still dominated the TVC Ohio and they too are the smallest school in the division. Numbers make a difference but don’t tel the entire story. I’m just putting information out there so people can see and it’s up to them to decide why/how Athens has been so dominant over the last 10 years since joining the TVC. It’s all about conversation and this topic has been and will continue to be a popular discussion. I like hearing both sides!

Because Jackson, Bloom Carroll, Watkins, Chillicothe, Logan, Parkersburg South, Zanesville, Waverly, Gallia, and Warren arent very good at always having a winning record.

That's kind of a dumb way to look at quality opponents since the teams above would be worth less than Wahama, Coal Grove, and Fed Hock.

Best coach in the TVC wears Orange, white, and Brown. 8-)
