Thanks to Tom Kayser and Dr. Sean Dunne and to the many people who helped begin the much needed renovation of Spartan Stadium.

fyi: Jim Thorpe never played in Universal/Spartan Stadium. He was a player-coach for the Portsmouth Shoe-Steels in 1927 though. He played in the NFL from 1920-1926 and then he left the NFL at the age of 41 in 1928.

Bill Hewitt - Chicago Bears
George Christensen - Portsmouth Spartans
Glen (Turk) Edwards - Boston Braves
Grover (Ox) Emerson - Portsmouth Spartans

Mel Hein - NY Giants
Arnie Herber - Green Bay Packers
Cliff Battles - Boston Braves
Johnny (Blood) McNally - Green Bay Packers
Ken Strong - Staten Island Stapletons

Bronko Nagurski - Chicago Bears

Definitely need to add Curt Gentry - one of the leaders on Portsmouth's greatest football team in 1953.

Honestly, he should have been included with the initial class since he played in the NFL.

Something I would like to see is to get the track fixed as well and then Notre Dame and Shawnee State could host Track & Field meets at Spartan Stadium; maybe even one day have Shawnee State hosting football games.

The old girl by the levy deserves a chance to survive and thrive. Notre Dame plus say big intra county games along with playoff contests and eventually SSU could be showcased if the money could be found.

The old lady by the river has seen her day. The history is great but just that history. The $25000 is nice but hardly does little to make the facility usable. The time and effort of those working on behalf of the stadium would be better served trying to create a new venue.

Too much great football played in that stadium for so many years to let it go unused. I hope the effort to save it is a success.

This was and still is the home of the Trojans. When I come to Portsmouth , Spartan or Universal Stadium is always associated with the Trojans, always will be in people's minds. Will Trojans ever play another game in there home.
